My friends transmission is on it's way out, he's located one in a wrecked trausus, it's not been run in one year, he wanted to know what the odds of it going bad, or would you recommend doing anythind special before using it? It's a 96 taurus, auto. thanks for any input.

At the minimum new fluid and if applicable filter. The existing may have water/condensation in the fluid. Trans itself wouldn't 'go bad' in a year from just sitting.
I would check into any pattern failures in these AT's that sometimes might be easily addressed when the AT is out of the donor vehicle before installing it into his.

Thanks, the transmission in the taurus has issues, so that is a good idea about looking in to that.
Cool. I don't remember for sure but it seems to me that Taurus's around that year did have some AT issues.

The issues were up to 1994 then everything is pretty good after that. They come with the AX4S or AX4N transmissions. Make sure to get the right one.
My Daughters 96 is the AX4N as is my 98. I would run a auto-rx dose and run it for the clean phase then change out.

Well, it IS coming from wrecked car. But probably its ok. If you arent rebuilding it, I would see if you could get a transmission shop to dyno test it. You don't want to do that sort of labor only to find you swapped one dead head for another. And if you are paying a guy to do it, you REALLY don't want to pay twice.
I am rebuilding a chrysler 3 speed and I am gonna have a shop dyno it before it goes in. I live under the principal of engineering, "Trust but verify".
