Ford calls it a modular engine, because the that is the family of engines it belongs to. They call it a modular engine because they built a family of engines that could use many of the same parts throughout the family.
The Duratec V-6 line share the same modular design and flexible manufacturing concepts as Ford’s family of V-8 engines. The engine itself was designed in Dearborn, Mich., while its electrical, induction and exhaust systems were designed by Ford engineers in Dunton, England, with packaging developed at Ford’s Merkenich, Germany operation.
