During my research it seems owners have experienced a lot of issues with this engine, how are 2016+ models with this engine? I know it uses a timing belt rather than a chain.
I know base models had a regular 2.5 and top line had the 2.0 turbo, I only saw complaints about the 1.6 turbo.

There were bunches of recalls on this engine a few years ago, and not for trivial issues. It is also a "dead" power plant in the U.S., having been replaced by the more modern 1.5T in the Fusion for the 2016 model year and the Escape in 2017. Guess I'd avoid it unless the deal was too good to pass up.

Let the force be with you. When in doubt don't

A friend gets Escapes as company cars. He had a 2014 (I don't know what year exactly but it was one of the first two years for that engine) and it was a disaster, issue after issue, recall after recall. He then got one two model years newer and it has been much better.
