Ford changes oil grade recommendations for 2016

One thing for sure if they do back spec older models to 5W30 it won't be for CAFE credits. The only reason I can see them doing it would be the 5W30 is actually a better choice.

That's exactly what I was thinking too. I just wonder if Ford will state the reasons why they spec 5w30 in the 2016 versions. If they back spec the < 2016 variants then I wonder if they will state the reason why. This is such a loaded gun debate I am very interested in what Ford has to say about this. The new recommendation is either from 1.) a design change in the 2016 variants 2.) Lubrication issues with 5W-20 3.) The < 2016 engines weren't designed for optimal use with 5W-20. Hopefully it's just an engine design change.

I am all ears on this though!

Exactly! Still though, I don't know of any oil related issues in 2011-2016 6.2Ls with 5W-20. There really aren't any issues with that engine period. Lol So I wouldn't be surprised if they don't back-spec older trucks.

The 2012 has always had 5W-20 as well. No oil related issues, or any issues at all. I honestly hope they back spec our trucks to 5w30, I'll gladly use it. A thicker oil during heavy towing is never a bad thing.

Why wait for Ford?

I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for Ford to state their reasons. I think like much of what goes on in the industry all we can do is guess. In this case I have a feeling why, and it wasn't to boost the slumping sales of 5W30 oil, or boost CAFE credits.

The good news is whatever reason it is, it's good to see they're on top of things.

I think that war has been raging all along for the past 10+ years. This will just be considered a victory for the 'thick crowd.'

True. Oh what an interesting day today has turned out to be.

The difference between 5w30 and 5w20 is about the difference between Coke and Pepsi. It never fails to amaze me how many people really think it makes a actual difference in real world. People will say they run their Fords 200,000 miles on 5w20 and other folks say they ran their Fords 200,000 miles on 5w30 and everybody still believes its the oil.

Hm, this may get me to consider using 5W30 in my girlfriend's Sable when it gets warm. Not that either of us know exactly what has been put into it until recently, and at 220K miles I don't think it really cares.

Because. Maybe this is just a design change in the engine for 2017 & 5w30 is the best oil after the design change, while 5W-20 is the best oil for my version of the engine. 5W-20 has been perfectly fine for me so I'm not switching unless Ford says so.

Not a good example.

Not if it's a ILSAC 5w30, that's just a 20 weight oil in baggy clothes. Now if they made it an ACEA A3 5w30, that would be different.

I thought you said a thicker oil is good for towing?

All applications.

F59 chassis (delivery vans, motorhomes) made the switch last year (from 5w-20 to 5w30), so I'm not surprised to see these follow suit.

Ford obviously sees a reason to now deviate from their long established practice of recommending 5w-20.

Really? I didn't know that... 5.4 3v as well? Because the E-series died recently. I think 2013 was the last year. I have one in our fleet. 2013 E350 V10.
