I have a 1950 Ford 8N tractor with 4 cylinder gasoline engine equipped OEM with a by-pass filtration system. My question, what is the correct style filter to use. There are 3 types on the market. Purolator offers a pleat style element, which I thought was only for full flow systems. Fram offers a stacked cardboard disc style, which I am unfamiliar with. FleetGuard offers a woven cotton string media, which I thought was the correct media for by-pass filtration systems. Your thoughts please. Thank you. Philip.

The correct filter for these engines is none of the above. The pleated paper one is the worst but the others aren't good enough. If you want the oil to always look like new you need a submicronic filter. I wouldn't have any trouble converting the housing to take a roll of Scott 1000 sheet TP but it would be better to go ahead and buy a housing designed to take TP. I am a Motor Guard dealer but the Frantz oil cleaner works equally well. These filters are very impressive on the older engines because the oil gets so dirty and looks so nice when the filters clean the oil. Clean oil doesn't need to be changed.
