What is the point of posting if you don't believe what you originally wrote?
It's obvious that this was a short trip and that you didn't get your oil up to operating temps. I have to conclude that you were aware of this.

I would expect lower oil temps using a 20 grade over a 30 grade oil. The oil flow through the bearings should be somewhat greater thus carrying more heat away.

This exactly.

Engineers build safety factors in.

When CAFE came along they took the safety factors out or the oil viscosity. "Value Engineering". Making the same stuff for cheaper. In this case, getting 1% better results on the CAFE Test at the expense of your oil safety factor. If you don't need the safety factor you should be fine.

Everyone can run whatever they want in there own car. As an engineer I like more safety factor.
The 0W-20 may have plenty of safety factor built in.
Lord knows that a 20 grade has been used for enough years that were there any problem with it we'd have seen the results by now.
Way back in olden times, like the fifties and sixties, 20W-20 was a commonly recommended grade.
My how things haven't changed.
