Hopefully this is a good place to post this question. Whatever it may be that you are fogging; car, boat, tractor, etc..., why does the can say you need to spray thru air intake 5-10 sec until smoke is seen, shut engine off, then spray in the spark plug holes.

I can do this with regular oil. I thought fogging saved all this hassle as it goes thru the intake into each cylinder protecting everything.

Also, on fuel injected cars where the intake manifold is lower than the intake ports, wouldn't the oil just puddle in the bottom rather than go into the intake ports?

Yes, it does puddle in the bottom of the runners. Until you open the throttle and it sucks a big slug in, hydro-locks a cylinder and bends a connecting rod. Someone I know did just that trying to de-carbon an engine once. Oh, he de-carboned it all right, because all the parts that had carbon on them had to be replaced :-p

They make a fogging oil with a shrader valve attachment where you can intoduce fogging oil straight into the fuel rail. The added benefit is the injectors are protected as well.

Nice idea!

Right.
Techniques that worked OK with carburetors can fail with fuel injection systems.
I'd use a heavy MMO concentration in the gas [along with Sta-Bil] and run it a bit before storage.

Mechtech, are you sure it's safe to run MMO through the injectors like that? I remember when replacing the shoddy Maxima injectors, the holes were like pin holes, at the pintle cap. Wouldn't the MMO just clog the injectors?

MMO won't clog anything even in high concentrations. The opposite is true. It'll keep everything cleaned and lubed until you start the engine again.

I've been using MMO as a fogging oil for many years. What I like is that it doesn't foul the plugs, and while it is sitting in the engine until the spring it softens carbon and junk in the rings, etc. Opinions vary.
