My son teenager has a mild head cold. He's not laying in bed feverish moaning but he's blowing his nose, somewhat less peppy but tired earlier in the day. He's.... got a cold.

Should we still have him get the inactive flu vaccine shot tonight?

Flue is going around now and I'd hate to miss out on prevention by skipping the vaccine. BUT I don't want it to cause a double whammy or start some other unknown Gulline -Barr syndrome or something scary.

I would call and ask whoever gives the shot. When I get mine, the questionnaire asks "Are you feeling sick today" or something like that. I don't know what happens if you answer "yes."

Back in the old days people had a family doctor for such questions. They would actually talk to you on the phone. They even knew who you were and took care of your whole family. Sometimes they even treated your healthcare issues first before considering giving you a pill.

With assembly line healthcare you will get a canned answer, that is wait until the cold has gone away because they have no idea who you are and don't have the time to find out. The system now is, you describe a problem and you get a pill. So, wait and then get the shot. Next...........

+1 plus the flu shot vaccines are unreliable.

Last years concoction was less than 30% effective. I have never had the shot before, but looking at the ingredient list, I sure like what they put in there...

What's in the Seasonal Flu Vaccine?

The flu strains selected are cultivated in chick embryos for several weeks before being inactivated with formaldehyde, which is a known cancer-causing agent. Then they're preserved with thimerosal, which is 49 percent mercury by weight.

According to the CDC, the majority of flu vaccines contain thimerosal. Some contain as much as 25 mcg of mercury per dose. This means that it may contain more than 250 times the Environmental Protection Agency's safety limit for mercury.

By now, most people are well aware that children and fetuses are most at risk of damage from this neurotoxin, as their brains are still developing. Yet the CDC still recommends that children over six months, and pregnant women, receive the flu vaccine each year.

In addition to mercury, flu vaccines also contain other toxic or hazardous ingredients like:

Aluminum -- a neurotoxin that has been linked to Alzheimer's disease

Triton X-100 -- a detergent

Phenol (carbolic acid)

Ethylene glycol (antifreeze)

Betapropiolactone - a disinfectant

Nonoxynol - used to kill or stop growth of STDs

Octoxinol 9 - a vaginal spermicide

Sodium phosphate

By any standard they save thousands of lives in the U.S. every year. Are they perfect? [censored] [censored] no are they at least 25% effective and do they make a difference even if you get the flu? [censored] Yes. Its smart to play the percentages. I may be stupid but I ain't dumb.

Take shingles..the vaccine is expensive but is 50% effictive. Does it make sense to get it if Its only 25% effective and is expensive...yup. Pneumonia vaccine is probably 20% effective. You are crazy if you don't get it.

I have had the flu zero times in the last 40+ years. I have the habit of catching everything. Oh yea I have been getting the flu shot since 1972.

" In a non-pandemic year, a person in the United States aged 50–64 is nearly ten times more likely to die an influenza-associated death than a younger person, and a person over age 65 is over ten times more likely to die an influenza-associated death than the 50–64 age group.[30]" Its a no brainer if you are over 50.

Right you are Al.

I forgot to mention that his one has no Thermiserol , the mercury stuff. Not that it has anything to do with the aspect of getting it or not when having a head cold

I suppose I will wait, And with our luck my son will finish his head cold in 5 days and be vomiting with the flu and a fever in 8 days.

Make sure you're not getting it from a multi-dose vial and you should be fine.

Smokescreen sounds like one of those folks who thinks smallpox and polio were just peachy keen.

Why would anyone get a vaccine that is just a best guess as to which strain against which you are being vaccinated?

I knew it wouldn't take long for someone to bring up smallpox etc.

If you're young and worried about becoming severely ill or dying from common things that go around every single year you need to figure out how to be healthier so you can easily fight off these things, not get shots of hope every year.

Remember when H1N1 was in the news? I had a regular flu shot, but not for H1N1. Caught a mild case of the flu that had me coughing, and when I was tested I tested positive for H1N1. My doctor reasoned that I would have been feeling much worse if I hadn't had a flu shot at all.

Most people with the flu do not get very sick. That's just as good of an explanation as his. The fact that you went to the doctor indicates you were actually pretty sick compaired to most.

Everyone who is within the age groups and does not have a compromised immune system should get one. Certainly could ask your primary care doctor (everyone should have one) if you have a concern.

In the list of who should get a flu shot it mentions:

-Anyone who does not want to get the flu

I get one every year. Also have recently got the shingles, TDAP and pneumonia vaccine.

There are whole bunches of folks who do not die from lung cancer from smoking, that doesn't mean continuing to smoke is a good thing.

Get the shot, if not for you, for your family, friends, and co workers.

Imo if you're around the public or a bunch of people on a regular basis you should get one. I always get my flu shot. One year at work the few people that didn't get one (we get them free at work) got the flu, some even got it twice, while we who got the shot never got it.
