flow of the PureOne

Since the purolator pureone is such a high filtration filter, can that restrict oil flow too much in an engine (moreso in the winter?).

Or have they been designed to filter and flow well?

No filter can restrict flow "too much" in an engine because there is a bypass valve to prevent just that. Purolator makes one of the most restrictive filters and one of the least, would they do that If they believed it made much of a difference?

There was a study done a while ago and posted on this forum. Many members shared the same sentiment that the flow was restrictive with test data to back up their beliefs. However, when you look at the data, the oil flows from the filter were taken at room temperature. We all know what happens to oil when it gets hot, it thins out. There, in my opinon, may be restriction during startups and/or cold temperatures, but that is what the bypass is for. The benefits of this type of filter are well worth the ocassional bypass.

Well, then, I have a possibly not brilliant question then. I'm not contradicting, Shmoe, but rather curious. If bypass operation of the (somewhat) restrictive media isn't harmful given the benefits rendered by that media (98% of 10 micron particles in the case of a PureOne), why not build spin-on filters with the media of, say a bypass filter capable of removing 1 micron particles?

I realize most of the oil would bypass, but ALL of the oil would pass through that 1-micron filtration at a rate of, say, a gallon every minute instead of 6 through a PureOne? I forget the flow rates, but would the finer filtration justify the high bypass rates to remove the smaller particles? I'm assuming a bypass that doesn't flow the bypassed oil over the dirty side of the media, of course.

Please read Gary Allen's posts on Pure One filters. Other than immediatly at cold startup he could not get a Pure One to go into bypass mode using something like 20w50 oil.

Highroller - No. All filters go into bypass at cold startup. After cold startup he could not get the "very restrictive" Pure One to go into bypass.

To paraphrase, except in an extreme circumstance (WOT with the tach needle bouncing off of redline, for instance), the PureONE will not be in bypass once the oil reaches operating temp. Arvin-Meritor's engineers know what they're doing.

Ah i got ya.. very informative. i tend to believe that the pureone's are incredibly well-designed.
