i have a couple that leak slightly. i know hydraulic fluid is the correct to put in them. i have also read of people putting in ATF in them also. and some even say motor oil will work.

any truth that other oils will work?

Yes, you want a light oil. Something like full synthetic 0w-20 will work. When it is cold, you want the oil to flow so it can pump.

Advance Auto sells hydraulic jack oil, other parts stores sell it as well. I'd use that, it doesn't cost much either.

You can buy Bar's jack oil with stop leak, which works well (I've used it). It stopped a leak on my jack within a month, and the action is smooth with it. You can use any hydraulic oil, including ATF. If the AFT contains extra seal conditioners, it may help to stop a leak on your jack as well. I understand that this isn't the stated need, just something worth noting. Keep in mind the intrinsic, funny smell of ATF, if it gets on you or all over the jack, then it could follow the jack for a long while. That being said, I think I'd still rather go with ATF in the future since it's there (I do D&Fs) and floor jacks take so little to fill.

Walmart has it in the auto section where the jacks are. You can also buy it at an auto parts store but it'll cost you more.

ISO AW32. One quart should do for the rest of your life.....Please dont't tell me some Bitogger is changing his jack oil.

After decades of zero maintenance, I found my bottle jack lying on its side in a pool of oil, so I had to buy some. A few years later I rebuilt it and bought some more. The next year my 30 year old floor jack went out and I bought some more and rebuilt it. So yeah BITOGer's need to buy jack oil sometimes. Walmart and every auto parts store sell it.
