For the first time in history the USA junior ice-hockey team took home a gold medal by defeating the Canadian juniors 4-3 in the championship game played in Helsinki, Finland. It was a great game to watch (imagine playing) as the USA juniors overcame a third period 3-1 deficit to tie the game. Then lady luck lent a hand as a clearing attempt by the Canadian goaltender deflected off his own man's shoulder and into the net providing the game winner for team USA.
As a lifelong hockey nut and a dad with a son who plays the sport, my eyes were glued to the TV set. Seeing those young players stand shoulder to shoulder singing the Star Spangled Banner as Old Glory was being raised, nearly brought tears to my eyes.
Three cheers for the Canadian juniors who played a fine game. They conducted themselves with poise, representing their fellow countrymen honorably.
BTW....I wish the NHL would go to the wider, international style rinks. It would really help open up the game.
