IMHO as usual we seem to get hung up on what we believe and the facts are sometimes just a passenger in the process
Firstly though a tribute to Amsoil's founder for Marketing a API compliant synthetic PCMO first - in NA perhaps
1 - The Patent for a synthetic lubricant was issued in the late 1800s
2 - Synthetic lubricants were used by many manufacturers in the 1920s and 1930s in their race cars (ask Castrol about their castor oil based range)
3 - Synthetic lubricant development became serious in the 1930s at the hands of the Germans (Castrol, Mobil, Shell, FUCHS, IG, Rhurchemie, Fischer-Tropsch to name just a few players and the first three under various guises)
4 - In the early 1940s the Germans became very familar with these terms;
a) Ethylene polymers
b) Polyolefins
c) Halogenated Hydrocarbons
d) Polyalkylene Glycols
e) Esters
f) and etc
The process produced many engine lubricant variants. This was the basis for the modern synthetic lubricant "family" of products as we know them today
5 - During this period they DISCARDED the "four ball" EP test as totally unsuitable and developed their own instead
6 - The Germans produced at least 1700 Barrels of fully synthetic lubricants per day during the WW2 period. Many other semi-synthetised lubricants were also produced too
7 - Excellent synthetic greases were developed at this time
8 - The "synthetic lubricant technology" ex Germany was alive and well in the hands of the US and English Oil Companies before and after March 1945
9 - Most English racing motorcycles from 1945 onwards used castor based lubricants (thanks to Castrol and FUCHS at least)
10 - In 1959 in NA for instance synthetic lubricant production was alive and well in aircraft use and supplied by Texaco-Caltex, Castrol and Mobil to name but three
I could go on and on but the history of synthetic lubricant development is a truely convoluted one
So if for nothing else we should salute Amsoil for being the first serious marketer of an API compliant synthetic PCMO
