First Street Bike for Large Adult

let me preface this with I know NOTHING about bikes, and anyone who might take this too seriously , move along to the next post please.

but I am 5'9", about 310 lbs, and just going with my gut, I've always thought if I were to get a bike, it would have to be a Fat Boy.

Most street bikes with more than 500cc are going to be able to accelerate a 300 pound rider faster than most cars accelerate. The power to weight ratio of motorcycles versus cars is one of the things that makes them so fun. That isn't going to be the main issue.

Most motorcycles seem to have suspensions designed for lighter riders, so if you are over 200 pounds just count on needing to do a little work. Some bikes (like my SV650) have a rear end for a heavy person and a front end for a little girl. If you ride in a spirited manner, it will matter.

I am 6'4" and 230lbs. Many years in the motorcycle biz.One thing I saw constantly were big guys buying little bikes then losing a fortune on them in a few short weeks when they realized that a big bike was the way to go. Lots of inexpensive big V-Twin cruisers out there with under 5K miles on 'em for relatively small bucks. The VTX1300 or VTX1800 come to mind. If you like to just cruise and can afford one, Harleys are nice! If you want cheap shop for a Kaw 1500 Vulcan or Suzuki ricer...Nothing looks more goofy than a huge dude on a little cycle..just sayin'

With your offroading background if your wife doesn't care, I would suggest owning two different themed bikes

I brought my klr650 home and my brother, (who loves his r6 to death) turned around and found a craigslist honda xr600 within a week. He has his r6 for longer rides on the highway but he couldn't stop drooling at my new kawasaki. He says it's like riding a comfy bmx bicycle compared to the racing inspired bike.

Well, after many months of research and a few test rides, a choice has been made.

This week I take delivery of a 2013 BMW C650GT scooter. I was leaning towards a dual-sport type machine since i've been riding off-road for 30+ years. The GS line is impressive, but cost prohibitive at this point. I snickered at the scooters at first, but taking the GT for a spin more than changed my snicker to a WOW.

The Burgman 650, Vstroms and KLR 650 were on the final list as well. Besides the machine itself, how I was treated by the dealer, pre-sale, during the sale and now is nothing short of spectacular.

How I was treated by the sales staff of the local Honda and Suzuki dealers, along with the reviews of the respective service departments on youtube amd various other review sites, i'm very happy with my decision.

I'm a dirt bike rider, so I'm not particularly comfortable on low street bikes. I like 'em tall. While, I'm only 215 pounds, I still find many street bikes "small".


I'm 6'3/200 lbs. My favorite bike was a 400cc 4 cylinder.

I always preferred twist grip shifter scooters, but that BMW has me fascinated.

Compared to the C650GT, the Burgman is boring.
