What's up everyone? This is my first post, just wanted to give a run down of my truck and oil/filter setup.

96 Toyota T100, 2.7L 4 Cyl, 2WD with 215K miles.
Castrol Syntec or* Mobil 1 synthetic 10W-40
Purolator PureOne or* Bosch Premium filter
*(whichever is cheaper at the time)

My truck runs pretty well, and I keep up with my oil changes. I change my synthetic around 7K miles or every 4 months.
I live in Atlanta, GA (mild winters, hot summers).
Though most of my work commute is highway, traffic is often heavy, and I am sometimes stuck in stop and go situations.

When I'm cold cranking my truck in the winter, the engine knocks a little until it warms up. I'm told that is typical for my engine, and that one thing to do to minimize the knocking is to use a thicker oil. How sound is that advise? I think 10W-40 is plenty heavy... should I bother bumping it up to something heavier?

Are there better formulas or weights to use during winter as opposed to summer, or for stop and go traffic? Should I be using a different weight all together?

Thanks in advance for any input!

Welcome to BITOG.

Hate to say it but since even the lightest 20wt oil is too thick on start-up I'd try a lighter 5w30 oil as that's all your need and it might lessen the cold knock with it's faster pumping flow.

I think 10W40 is too thick for that engine, I would try Mobil 1 High Mileage or Extended Performance 5-10W30 for 1 or 2 changes. Also, you can extend your oil change interval (OCI) to 10-12k miles or 6 months, since your driving is mostly highway and more than 30 miles each way is very easy on oil.

+1, extended oil change intervals would be fine with those oils. Welcome!

IMO....Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30....a PureOne....and a 10K +/- OCI would be and excellent way to go....and give your vehicle several more years of good service.

+1, and welcome to Bitog.

Thanks for all the input guys... think I'm going to go with the Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30 and see how she rides. I have been using purolator pure one filters... what's the verdict on these?

If i recall correctly the 4.7L tundra motor calls for 5w30 motor oil. It probably says right on the fill cap.

10K on mobil 1 with either 0w30/5w30 sounds reasonable. Currently, toyota, does 10K with 0w20 on that motor.

Not that i recommend changing weights, especially since you live in an area with moderate weather.

I have no experience with purolator oil filters, but it's highly regarded by most bitog's.

What's your oil consumption like?

I generally agree that the 10w30 rec. is a good one, and if you still get start-up knock, I'd try a 5w30 or 0w30 oil, to see if the slightly faster start-up flow will get rid of it.

What is the cause of the knocking and then does it matter? You are at 215,000 miles what is the average lifespan of that model engine?
