I just bought a 'Super-Tech' Super Tech8A filter and on the box it states 99% First pass efficiency, and 98% multi pass efficiency, as tested by Champion laboratories. Are these good ratings? And do they really mean anything? And, most importantly, is the Super Tech filter any good?

I don't know any specifics about this filter but he efficiencies seem high based upon my research. It sounds like it is good for filtering but who knows on the flow side. There are trade-offs between flow and filtering so the more efficient filters might kick into bypass more frequently.

BTW are you sure the first pass is a higher percentage than the multi-pass?

rgiles, someone posted similar numbers for these filters earlier. I assumed it was a typo, but now it sounds like a misprint. Or they're talking about different tests.

Cobra, these have been talked about quite a bit in the archives so a search might help. My impression is it's a good filter for the price. Don't recall if mfg was champion or wix.

The figures on the box are big, bold and part of a graph, so if it is a misprint, its a hell of a misprint! And the graph clearly states that the testing was done by Champion labs. However, it does say on the box "Check product for labled country of origin."

These eficiencies are among the highest. The only question is what are the particle sizes. There have been numerous discussions on this aspect. The Single pass is greater than the multi-pass. Pure One has a single pass of 99.7% and multi-pass of 98%. I believe I recall that Mobil 1 is based on 10 micron particles and K&N rates at 20 micron.

Personally, I do worry about the flow quantity-especially during winter months.

Several people who have spoken with Champion about the SuperTech filters have posted that they are rated at 20 micron. I don't think those high numbers at 20 micron would present any flow problems, which is one of the reasons I like this filter. That being said, is anyone noticing that the SuperTech shelf at your local WalMart seems to be getting smaller and smaller? I hope WalMart is not going to drop this line of filters.

If Walmart stops selling it, just buy the STP filter, I've heard that it's the same as the Supertech. Aren't these only about $3?

Patman, a Champion Tech told me that the Supertech is identical to the STP, just a different paint job. The STP is $2.77 at Autozone. -Joe

XHVI...I have noticed the same thing-and thanks for the info on the 20 microns. Joee12 - thanks for the info with respect to the STP's. The main filters I use are K&N's and SuperTechs for vehicles which are not as new and are closer to "beater status".

Well, I'm glad I found this page. I've learned some things already. My local Wal-Mart has dropped the STP oil filters also. Only Fram, a few A/C Delco, and some Motorcraft, but mostly Fram Filters. I just changed the oil in my wife's Explorer today, and put on a Fram oil filter I bought two weeks ago. I noticed I have a pinging sound, that was never there with motorcraft filters. I used a Fram before the last Motorcraft, and and had a ping then also, but not with the Motorcraft. This is the last Fram I'll ever buy.

I went to walmart today and while I was there I looked at the supertech filters (ST2808) and to answer your question Patman, the shell (casing) of the supertech felt thicker than the equivalent STP filter. I remember when I bought a STP filter about a month ago for my car, I remember tapping the very flat part of the filter on its top and it seemed pretty thin, and that kind of worried me a little bit. Since autozone also carries bosch, I compared the two and noticed that the casing seemed a little bit thicker too just like the supertech filter. Also, the o-ring was a little bit different on the bosch filter compared to the same size STP filter. However, when I was at walmart, I noticed that the o-ring on the Suptertech was pretty much identical to the Bocsh filter as well. So, I feel that the supertech filter is a little better quality (construction wise) than the STP filter and may very well be equal to the Bosch filter except for the filtering media of 20 micron vs. 15 micron. I don't think the STP filters are that bad, if that is all I noticed since rupture of the casing would be very very rare considering average oil pressure within the filter is not high enough to cause rupture within a localized area. I guess that is why we all worry about getting the best quality for our money, and that is why I have decided to go with Bosch filters from now on.

Oh, I forgot to mention, the other reason why I thought the STP shell was thinner was because I was able to push the flat part on the top in a little bit, then it would pop out, like the top cap found on snapple bottles or baby food. I was not able to do that on the SuperTech or Bosch filter. I also tried doing it on the Fram, but that black coating for grip kept me from doing it, but who cares since no body here uses fram anywayz.
