First Oil Change

Hello everyone, this is my first post and my first time trying my own oil change, so bear with me.

I have a 2009 Honda CR-V EX 4wd. I bought Castrol Syntec 5w-20 oil and a Puralator PureOne Oil Filter. I also got a pair of Rhino Ramps.

What else do I need for the change?

Where is the best place and price to get those supplies?

Do you have any suggestions/tips for my first time?

I have the service manual from Honda but it isn't very detailed and especially since I have never done this before, I need help. Thank you!

You might need an oil filter wrench and be sure to put a film of oil on the gasket of the new filter before you spin it on. Good luckand

You'll also need a 17 mm wrench, or socket and ratchet.
A funnel is also handy, as well as some sort of disposal container to hold your waste oil.

Buy a decent ratchet and socket set. Look for made in USA from either Lowe's or sears.

Don't forget to install the drain plug before adding the new oil - lol. I've heard of this happening.
Don't over tighten the drain plug. A little tighter than snug will do fine.

make sure when you take the old oil filter off, you check to make sure the old o-ring didn't stick fast to the filter mount. you don't wanna put the new filter on there with the old oring stuck on yet, you'll have a leak for sure. Also, i don't know how the filter is mounted on your honda, but if its mounted in the vertical position, make sure you fill it first to cut down on the amount of time it takes the engine to build up oil press. when you start it up after changing oil. And maybe you might wanna even take a paint pen, or sharpie and write the filter part #, oil capacity, and drain plug size somewhere in the engine compartment so next time you don't have to try and remember it all. Or, if you ever take it to a quick lube shop, it'll cut down on the guess work for them.

If a new crush washer is not absolutely necessary, you can always flip the old one. Doing this has worked on my vehicles for years.

Or just reuse it. You don't even need to flip it.

Don't forget wheel chocks for the back wheels.

When you remove that oil filter, oil is going to run everywhere. Be sure and try to wipe down everywhere the oil went, if not you will have oil drops on your floor for days. Honda engineers should be shot for that filter location.

Eh??? Are you thinking of a pre-2007 CR-V? The filter location is perfect on '07 on up. I had an '04 CR-V, and I agree that filter was a pain to change without making a mess. They moved it so it's right behind the oil pan, mounted vertically. No mess, no fuss.

I guess the CR-V is different than my two Honda Elements. Mine is on the back side of the engine at an angle. The Elements have the 2.4L engine.

Do most people do this? I've changed a lot of vertical filters and never even heard of this procedure. Have I been screwing up all these years?

Is the filter on the '09 CR-V a pain to get at? Does one NEED ramps and have to be double jointed to do an OC?

I have the 2.4 on my '08 CR-V, and it's pretty much the same engine as the one in my '04. The '04 had a K24-A1 and the '08 is a K24-Z1. Not sure what flavor the Element has, but it's a K24 as well. I can see on the '08 where the old filter location was, but it appears Honda added an extension to move the filter down closer to the pan. Much easier to get to and it doesn't spill oil all over the half shaft and frame.

Well those rascals. I wonder if that something I could add to my 05 and 06 Element. The way its set up now I just take them to the dealer with my oil and let them fight with it.

That's what I do on my second car/truck 01' Durango V-8. They have no issue about at all. I do buy their filter and such. All I want is my prefered oil in the crankcase.

Every time I changed the oil in my 1998 Accord or Dad's 2001 Civic I thought of those "engineers"...

I KNOW I could find 12 people to find me innocent.

If that did not work pleading temp insanity WOULD work!

NOT one of Honda's better moves.

I hope your doing this in a Garage out their in Ohio this time of year. So you may want to invest in a Kerosene heater.

Doesn't hurt. The quicker you can get oil to the moving parts the better. I first heard of doing this from a podcast with Jay Leno being interviewed. Makes sense to me.
