Im coming up on the first OCI soon and Im wondering which 5w30 would be best in it, whether synth or dino? Its a cub cadet rzt with the 23hp kawasaki engine.

The manual says a new filter isnt required until the next OCI but Im also wondering which filter would be best on it when its time for a new one. I prefer wix filters on my vehicles but I dont know if I can get one on the mower so I'll check and see. If not what would be best?

I wouldn't run 5w30 in that Kawasaki. 10w30, HD30, or 15w40 would be my choice. Air cooled, right? Here is what Kawasaki recommends for their air-cooled V-twins:

I looked at that same diagram in my manual the other day and had since forgotten that 5w30 wasnt on it so thanks for the reminder. I'll use 10w30.

Like the other fellas say, I'd stick with a HDEO in that high dollar beast. The engine oil of choice for my $$$$ OPE is Shell Rotella-T 5w-40. These V-twins are as expesive as a rebuilt vehicle engine.

As far as a filter goes, a WIX 51394 should be spec for you. If it were mine, I'd run a 51516 wich is 2" longer than the stock filter.

wait a minute. 5w20 but no 5w30 on list so move to 10w30? It just depends on which multi grade oil is used.

Look closer. 5w20 is only approved below 0 degrees C. He has a zero-turn mower. I don't think it will get any use at those temperatures.

I can't imagine any application suitable for a 5w30 PCMO in an air-cooled lawnmower.

Hey thats neat. Thats what I used to have on my car. The 51396 is 1/2" longer than the 51394 and I was told by wix that its beta ratio should be around 2/20=6/19 so it filters better than the 51516.

True. I have never mowed in anything below 50' but right now its not uncommon to mow when its around 100' out.

I might go with a straight 30W, that's debatable. But I would sure change the filter on the 1st oil change. The term "silver soup" comes to mind.

Thanks everyone. A filter wont cost much so I'll go ahead and change it for peace of mind.

I agree that 10w30 dino is a better choice than 5w30 dino in an air cooled motor. Synthetic would be better still. When do most of you consider an air-cooled OPE motor fully broken in?

I suppose we all know by now that the official Briggs & Stratton #1 oil recommendation for air cooled engines is Synthetic 5W30 for all temperatures between -20 degrees and +120 degrees. They sell a 5W30 synthetic under their own name. It is not an "SM" oil, by the way.
