First New Car Oil Change At 1,000 Miles ?

I guess that brings a good question...If a new car owner were to choose a short OCI in hopes of removing manufacturing/breakin particulate, is it more important to change the oil or the filter? I choose to do both.

Below is the mileage I've change the FF of my bought new vehicles:

  • 1993 Honda CBR600F2 - 500 miles, 3k mile average OCI subsequent to 1st change almost exclusively used Castrol GTX during the 18k miles I owned the bike
  • 1994 Ford Mustang GT - 1500 miles, 3k mile average OCI subsequent to 1st change used a variety of dino (Castrol GTX), semi-synthetic (Valvoline), and synthetic oils (M1) during the 88k miles I owned the car
  • 2002 Ford Explorer V6 - 3000 miles, 5k mile average OCI subsequent to 1st change used a variety of dino oils during the 92k miles I owned the SUV
  • 2006 Saab 9-3 2.0T - First change at 5k, second at 10k, 10k mile average OCI subsequent to 2nd change used either M1 0W-40 or GC 0W-30 still own the car with almost 80k miles

Never had any engine issues with the vehicles I've bought new. All ran well until I sold/traded-in.

I am DEFINITELY in the change at (or before!) 1000 miles camp. I've built engines- I'm *meticulously* clean and careful when I assemble an engine. I take 100 times more time and care than any factory does, and I have *seen* what kind of wear materials are shed in the first few hours of operation. Yes, you can leave the factory fill in there longer and count on the filter to catch and hold the ----, but why risk it when there's no need, and absolutely no ADVANTAGE in leaving the factory fill in longer.

Also, I worry about high fuel dilution as the rings are seating. I know most of this happens quickly, but I also know the process does not completely finish with the first 200 miles.

100 times more care than any factory?
Where do we start with this one...

OK, I'm exaggerating. But a hand-built engine put together over a period of several days with every nook and cranny tanked, wiped down, covered in solvent, and then wiped down again is cleaner than assembly-line work where several engines go together every hour with parts yanked out of massive bins.

I'm pointing this out to refute the oft-repeated argument that "modern engines are SO clean and SO precise that you don't need to change the oil during break in... blah blah blah."

Its all nonsense- the big gotcha isn't dirt from assembly, its the flood of wear particles that come off the moving parts in the first hours of operation.

I am definetly in the camp of changing the initial FF at or before 1,000 mi. I want all break-in metal and debris out of my engine.
Looking back at my maint records on my S10 I went into overkill mode.
1st oil change at 654mi. refill w/Castrol 5W30 conv
2nd oil change at 1,500 mi. Havoline 5W30 conv
3rd oil change at 2,994 mi. Mobil 1 5W30 conv.
I did another at 6,000 mi. then at the 10,000 mi. mark It got Mobil 1 10W30 full synthetic. After that OCI's every 5K.
Looking at the receipts back in 1999 I was paying .99 cents per qt. for conv oil! Ah the good ol' days!

I did an oil and filter change on my 2010 C250 (M272 or 2.5L V6) @ 2500 miles. Suppose to change it either once a year or 12k miles. I don't seem to see any metal on the oil or filter. Filled it with GC. I definitely feel better (mentally only) after the change.

I was tought by a couple of old-timers that re-built engines all the time that you should dump the initial fill at 600 miles and refill and change filter and run that out to 3k miles and go from there.

My mom's brand new 10 Honda CRV is approching 4k miles, and she will drive it until 5k. Simply because the manual says so.

Does the manual not say to follow the Mantinence Minder and change the oil when indicated? It says "5000miles"?

I changed the oil on my new 09 CRV @ 800miles...simply because I can!

Sorry about the confusion, the manual says, "Don not change the oil until the scheduled maintenance time."

Plus i think she can go over 5000 miles and the oil life monitor will still be showing above 15%.(i will report back her oil life & miles right now)

Is there any consumption for your K24 if you drained the FF early?
