I guess you assumed about the Aussie outback, other people mentioned similar types of laws from around the world as it's a global problem. I recall seeing lots of graffiti in Europe for instance. It seems reasonable to expect others to relate similar issues from where they live, this is a global forum, so if it's desired to limit discussion to rural areas in Australia a qualifier seems warranted, something not indicated in the title of this topic or in the initial post.

No, I wasn't assuming. I was trying to get the thread back on track regarding the banning of permanent markers in Australia. Nobody has yet stated where exactly this law would be in effect -- in the city, or simply everywhere. Until informed otherwise, I PRESUME the permanent parker law is in effect anywhere in Oz.

Obviously, and I figured people would know, there are laws regarding buying and carrying permanent markers in many places, for example California. For example, minors are not allowed to carry permanent markers with a tip over 1/4" wide on SF public buses.

Anyway, are you actually proposing that a categorical marker ban makes sense? I will say that the public buses in SF have now all scratched windows, because those prone to destruction will now doodle with a key on the windows as opposed to using a pen. Yeah, that's a real improvement.

Per one link it appears that Western Australia is getting specific about permamnent markers....

Western Australia
The City of Belmont has proposed the Graffiti Local Law 2007, which aims to increase community protection from graffiti vandalism by:

Requiring spray paint cans to be stored or displayed in an area inaccessible to the public
Ban the sale of such items to minors
Make it an offence for individuals to be in possession of “restricted items” (spray paint cans, permanent markers and glass cutters) while on private property without the consent of the owner.

i used to live there 1sttruck, and saw no more than usual tagging/graffiti. but that law makes sense. especially the proviso's on when it actually is illegal. they won't arrest you for walking down the street with it.

I thought the premise was:

As of today, it's an offence to walk down the street with a permanent marker in your pocket.

Now, I wouldn't expect permanent marker checkpoints. Not yet at least. They might eventually crop up at public transportation access points, public buildings etc. Maybe dogs could be trained to sniff out markers, or maybe every marker could have an integrated RFID tag.

they'd be sky high those poor labradors.

Huffing hounds? I sometimes wonder if drug sniffer dogs are volunteers, and are very eager to go look for them. With a nose like that a sniff may good as a toke or shot. He He.

Also, shop keepers who sell spray cans used for graffiti can be charged the clean-up costs.

Now that is a heck of a precedent. Can you sue car dealerships for drunk drivers?

FEMA can suspend any and all rights ..property ..travel ..possession ...food ..media .. resources ..factories ..mines ..wells ..

You name it ..they can take it or commandeer it ..close it ..operate it.
