First brand new mower

Well I bought my first brand new lawnmower- last one lasted 25+ years

Any tips on how to break in the new engine?

I'd simply follow the directions provided with the mower.
If you want to change out the oil after 5 or 10 hours of use, that would be fine.

Run the engine at full throttle while mowing to keep the engine cool. Change the oil at ` 5 hours to the recommended grade & viscosity oil.

Did you do anything special to the out-going mower, 25 years ago? Did that mower have any oil-burning or hard-to-start issues that may have been attributable to its break-in (or lack thereof) that you're trying to correct this go around?

Once the first tank of gas is run out. Leave it empty so you can flip the mower on to it's side to dump out the oil. I like refilling with 15w40 heavy-duty engine oil, but any decent motor oil will d0 30, 40wt variants preferred.

Don't most lawnmowers these days either run wide open (at governed speed that is)
or don't run at all?
As in no idle.

+1 on changing oil at 5 hours.

Our newer Briggs says right in the manual to run only at full throttle period.

Whzt did you do on the last mower? I would cut the lawn and do the first change in 5 or so hours.

Maybe it's a fancy mower where you don't changed the oil.. just add and go.

What happened to your old one?

Its a B&S - My old mower never used any oil - just a couple of carb tuneups and hose changes.

We replaced the old mower because the parts were not being made anymore - could not find replacement parts

Not much you can do since many have a fixed throttle but I would change oil at 5 hours then you can follow regular changes as specified.You did it correctly with your old mower since you got over 25 years out of it.

Besides the oil try to use non-ethanol fuel if it's available. The applies all the more so for storage.
