I sent the following message to blackstone labs, but i thought you guys might have some feedback on my situation as well.

Thanks for taking the time to look/respond

______

I’d like to send you a sample of oil without doing a complete change, so I can get a report back with your analysis and make (if there are any) adjustments as efficiently as possible.

The directions found at http://www.blackstone-labs.com/gas_sampling.html recommend “ If you're taking your sample while changing the oil, let some oil drain before you fill up the bottle. Try not to get either the first or the last oil out of the pan.”

How much oil should I let drain out before I take my sample to be analyzed? 1 quart? 2 quarts?

How long does is the turnaround time before I would get results back?

Thanks
John

your going to have to sample through the dipstick tube unless you have a valve. You could take the plug out, let it drain for a few seconds and catch some, stick the plug back in but your probably gonna lose half your oil.

turnaround is pretty quick, if you mail it priority. I sent my sample in monday morning and had results on a wednesday or thursday of that week

You need to buy or borrow a sample pump to take a sample from the dipstick (and some virgin hose). Its about $20, so only makes sense if you may do it often. Not sure who sells one besides Amsoil. A Blackstone sample bottle will fit the Amsoil pump. Virgin hose is $0.12/ft and you need maybe 3 ft per sample.

I think you could pull the drain plug and let some drain, take the sample and loose less than 2 QTs. But the oil will be hot and you may need to put thumb over drain plug hole while you put down sample bottle and pick up the drain plug.

Personally I prefer OAI labs for the UOA, but that is just me.

Blackstone sells a pump as does Amsoil.

I was going to mention EasyVac ..which also sells bottles ..but they list just about EVERY lab used as one of their distributors ..Blackstone ...Analyst
