The thing about that is, it's true! Unlike your belief that your OLM is dead set on 10,000. If the OLM is really set on 10K regardless, then something is wrong with it. Plain & simple. I'm not calling you a liar, but look at all these Fords I deal with in the family business & the Fords I drive every day for all these years. There is no oil life monitor that is set on 10,000 miles from Ford. There's the intelligent OLM, which could range from 5,000-10,000 & there's the "unintelligent" OLM that's set on 7,500 regardless of conditions. Ford's IOLM also works like a charm, I get oil changes from 6,000-10,000 depending on the vehicle's usage.

The new inelegant OLM in the 2015 Ford Mustang (and probably all Fords) is also time based. The remaining "Oil Life %" will go down even while it's sitting in the garage and not being driven.

The base line is 1 year or 10,000 miles. If you didn't drive at all, it would still tell you to change it a year later. Perfect conditions get you upwards of 10K miles. A little towing/hot rodding, some city driving will probably get you about 7,500. Severe driving will be around 5,000. The OLM isn't time based & nothing else. It takes into account time (1 year max) & driving conditions for the optimal oil change interval.

Yes, I didn't mean to imply the iOLM was purely based on time ... of course it's also based on how the car is driven. What I was trying to convey was the iOLM will count down even if the car just sits and never runs because of the time factor. You could have a car with only 1500 miles on the oil have the iOLM read "0% Oil Life" before the year is over. Dumb OLMs don't take any time factor in to account.

Coincidentally, that just happened to my buddy with his new F-150, which sat almost unmoved for over six months. His last oil change was around a year ago, and it called for it today. There was less than 3,000 miles on the oil.
