Firefox Memory Useage

You made me curious about memory use.

FF is my main browser and has been since 2002.

Right now, my computer is at 11 days of uptime and Firefox has been open that entire time. I'm at 12 open tabs, albeit none are particular intensive.

I've noticed that after extended Firefox uptime(30 days or so) things can start not working right, but overall so far so good.

In any case, here's a snapshot of my current memory use

I found the Preferences page for Ublock Origin, to adjust the settings. It's inside Firefox Add-On listings..... the one for Ublock Origin.

I run an older PC and stopped updating F.F. because each new version seems to grab more onto resources than the previous version.

New versions usually do use more RAM than older versions.

Firefox is not unique in being a RAM hog, Chrome is too. I frequently see Chrome consuming multiple GBs of RAM with just a few uninteresting pages open. Depending on the circumstances, the browsers trade places wasting large amounts of RAM.

It seems that nowadays few applications are more RAM-hungry than the web browser. A decade ago we thought some desktop apps were getting bloated. But now the web is by far the most bloated inefficient app machine in popular use.

I think I'll give it a try. But I do find if I simply close and restart Firefox (don't have to reboot the computer) that the amount of memory will go back down to around 300K~400K and it then takes all day to build back up to 2,000,000K.

I also always update Firefox to the newest version as soon as it hits the street.


Sorry, I should have pasted those links. I always have so much open - many tabs, plus re-starting FF is a bit of a hassle because of some other customization. SO - I just set and forget Cache Status frankly. RAM at 2 Meg and disk at 10 meg. It just clears as needed (as set) and I don't even think about it, FF is more rock solid now than any time in the 10+ years of use. Again those numbers might seem low - especially since I have 32Gig RAM - but since everything is so speedy - and in fact PERFORMANCE IS BETTER - I don't care if FF can't cache useless junk.


OK just for grins I changed the disk cache to 100 meg. Honestly no difference detected yet, but will leave it for a week plus, see what happens.
