Instead of a ~150 onboard air kit, I was able to do it for a good bit less with better integration.

I sourced and mounted a ~$25 air compressor (small) and hard-mounted it under the hood. Used fittings from home depot to basically made a manifold to accept a pressure sender (for an electric gauge, mounted in-dash), a 12vdc solenoid valve, along with 1/4" OD tubing connector to feed to the springs in the back.

Two switches in the dash-- one "arms" the system (don't want accidental bumps on the up/down switch) and the second is a mom-off-mom to trigger the pump (via relay) or the solenoid for pressure release.

works well enough and seems to be holding air ok after 12 hours. Not quite happy with the gauge, but mechanically it's functional, just in time for our next trip!

the gauge was a sunpro 0-100psi unit that was sitting around in the garage. can't find a pic of it online.
