I have four grid lines that don't work on the back window defroster of my 2001 Sable. I shined a light from the other side and couldn't visually find the break. I then tried using a voltmeter with the unit energized, and an ohmmeter with it off, but that didn't work either. What is the proper way to diagnose bad grid lines?

i used a voltmeter dragging it from left to right, or right to left, i forget... and found it. i'm surprised you didn't.

to be honest, what helped me alot was the how to video on youtube, and the instructions with the repair kit bought at the store (paste with the stencil)

Found it! The breaks were all way over to one side. The gridlines still did not have visible breaks - they just got thinner (more opaque) in that area. Yes, the voltmeter did its job.

The auto store repair stuff will work pretty good.
Follow instructions and clean things first.
And don't wash the window interior every day!
