Finally Got Amsoil 5w40 Into Honda S2000

Well I have been preaching 5W40 as a good universal compromise for 99% of North America for some time now! I think it is the best all around compromise from just about every stand point expect. I just wish someone would make a 0W40 that did not shear so badly. I like M1's 0W40 but due to shearing I can not recommend it in a lot of applications.

It is not as simple as thick versus thin at all it is what feels right for that engine. If 0W10 is producing good results for you with low wear and low engine noise and has an OCI that is acceptable to you then go for it! I thin 0W10 would have my car tossing a rod out the side of the block! So it is not a thick or thin it is a matter of what is working best for you in your application. Some of us do not mind running an oil with an HTHS that is marginal and right on the line some people need a bigger cushion for their own sense of well being or because they drive their car like they just stole it!

Redline 0W-40?

The certification process proves your product has passed industry sufficient standard testing.

There are quality issues among many smaller blenders (NOT Amsoil) and many of the oils don't meet the specs claimed and are also out of spec. for very basic API SM tests.

There is a group that is going to be exposing a lot of these poorly formulated branded oils soon to help consumers make better choices.

People have this assumption that buying from a small company means you get better quality. It's just not that case.

I agree with you 100%, except that my analogy is the best one I can think of...so far. I just know too many stories of people with vtec engines switching FROM mobil 1 to (Amsoil, Redline, Motul) and enjoying little to no oil consumption over their further extended OCIs. That said, I also do notice that when Mobil 1 users switch to brand X there is almost always an increase in SAE visc. rating.

I agree with you. For whatever reason, Mobil 1 5w30 does not like the V-Tec engine. We've seen from Amsoil's own comparison testing that Mobil 1's NOACK is low. (8%). Not as low as it once was, or as low as RL/Amsoil, but lower then most other synthetics.

I don't know what causes it. Could have some relation to fuel dilution.

Loads of used oil analysis posted on S2ki (one of the S2000 forums - or should I say fora) have shown low wear with xxW-30 oils, even when it also showed the conventional oils had sheared down into 20 weight range.
So, in this application, history shows a 30 weight is working pretty good.

You're talking like a guy that likes the oil to be thick for "protection".
Get over it!

There was a used oil analysis posted not that long ago on S2ki, M1 for 4900 miles including 2 track days and the ppm's were low.
Sure, a little (5ppm) higher than universal average, but that's nothing keeping the 2 track drive-it-lile-you-stole-it days in mind.

My personal experiences with a 40 weight (Shell Helix Ultra 0W-40) were ok, used oil analysis showed iron ppm to be 3.73/1000 miles.
Oil was used for 67xx miles.
After that I used 0W-30, iron ppm was 1.88/1000 miles.
Oil was used for 12xxx miles, including 1 track day.

I'm all for true syn 30 weights in this engine!

Ohh.. and I would like to add that IMO about half the posts here are about

So: get used to it!

I really like the way my car runs on this oil, that's the gist of this particular post. That's got to be worth something since I'm the one paying for it. Not saying all 40 weights would be a perfect selection, but this particular product feels good (non-scientific opinion). I'll post some scientific data sometime in 2010. bye for now.

A motor company that sells cars. Ive owned alot of Hondas (cars and bikes) and my experience is, change the oil... and they will basically run forever.
