LOL - always wondered what a "vegemite sandwich" was ever since I heard the song > from Men At Work back in 1981...geez I guess I am getting old.

I prefer Marmite by a long shot over Vegemite. You
can get it at the same store. I had to stop using Marmite
because it is extreamly high in purines and if you have
gout like I do you cannot tolerate lots of purines.

I was a Marmite person a long time ago...Then I wanted something "different"...

My (American) wife would not go near either of those.

Growing up in Sri Lanka, i had lots of Marmite as a kid

Gratz on finding the vegemite...It's owned by Americans now, so I reckon it should be more widely available. We wen't to an alternate brand of yeast spread in protest, but are back with vegemite.

Uses
Smeared on teething rusks (kids are tough down here)

School lunches
Vegemite sandwich
Cheese and vegemite sandwich (add chicken crisps/chips, or hot fries with chicken salt for an added treat)
Lettuce and Vegemite Sandwich.

Prevent hangover, by eating a dessert spoon full and swallowing 425ml of water immediately before bed (vit b, water and salt)

dessert spoon full in a beef stew adds colour and flavour.

Roast meat gravy (poor cooks add vegemite to their gravy)

Local bakers, you can get cheesymite scrolls, which are cheese scroll rolls, with vegemite baked in.

It's also a key ingredient in prison gooney.

Empty a fire extinguisher, and fill with mashed fruit of your choice and sugar...add vegemite, and leave a few weeks to brew.

Local prison guards reckon that they would never rely on a fire extinguisher in an emergency.

Growing up in Marmite/Vegemite so I'm intimately familiar with it's taste and would not hesitate to have some here as well (difficult to obtain).

Also: some bovril would be nice also.

I was talking to a buddy who brews his own beer. He said breweries sell the yeast left over after the brewing, and wondered how it is purified to make liquid yeast or dry yeast like you buy in the store. Any of you know?

Kraft tried to stop Oz breweries from selling it to anyone else some years ago, and were stopped by our competition laws.

Vegemite was originally a way to turn the yeast residue from brewing into a food.

I don't think brewer's yeast and baker's yeast are the same.

hehe so much hate for this stuff. but some praise too..
Thanks for all the tips on how to use it many ways...

My wife's description: "looks like tar, tastes like vomit!" LOL!
