hey all im about to do another oil change after 7000 miles. Me and my friend both have a mazda 6, 2.3L engine and I use the oem size filter while he uses a filter for a mustang which is twice the size. Is it ok to use a bigger filter? Whats the pros and cons? please help.

Yes, you can use a larger filter if it has the same specs (ie, bypass pressure setting, threads, base diameter) and there is enough physical room on the car for the longer version.
Typically, filter manufactures make a short and a long version of their filters - the longer version is usually 3/4" to 1" longer. I always use the longer version if possible.
What filter brand and p/n have you been using on your car ... and brand and p/n is your buddy using?

that filter may sit too low and break off. we have had a few people break them off on their 3's, 6's and foci with those filters and none have been warrantied when the engines seized.

Good point ... never use a longer filter if it pokes down below the engine where it could be damaged by road debris or get damaged by going over speed bumps, etc.
I have a Vette, and I do NOT use any filter that sticks down below the oil pan. In my case, I will not even use the same size in K&N because the nut on the end sticks down beyond the oil pan plane.

Using a larger filter is very popular. I don't know that it helps, but as long you are careful about matching it and as bdcardinal pointed out, it doesn't get hit, it should be OK.
More oil capacity, better filtering most times,good thing to do,win win just need to check clearance

As bdcardinal advises......make sure that the larger filter fits correctly.....you do NOT want to have something like that sticking down below the other parts of the motor.
Sometimes filters are located such that a bit longer is not a problem.....but if it is the lowest part (below the oi pan), then it is a likely thing to scrape if you should "bottom out".
Also.....if a filter is in FRONT of the oil pan......there needs to be something substantial that is lower that is located in front of the oil filter....so it does not get hit should you park too close to the curb, etc.

Thanks for this info on longer oil filters...My 03 Ford Focus (2.3L)uses the PureOne PL 10241. I'm wanting to change over to the PL 20195 (Longer..with more media)...which has the same specs and is 1.38 inches longer.
I will see if there is there is enough room so that the longer filter won't get wiped out...should I bottom out....
