No, because there is a lot of non-ferrous debris generated inside an engine. Partials that a magnet will not attract.

I run magnets on a lot of filters...I've actually never really seen anything of significance, but I still run them.

Most of the magnets I have are from permanent magnet motors and are curved which fit the filters well. They do lose they attraction over time.

2. A magnet on the drain plug will only catch particles that happen to get close enough. All the oil goes through the filter, so it seems to me more likely for particles to be attracted. I do realize that most magnets do not stretch around the entire filter however.

Just filtermags for both my yaris and del sol. Id get one for the womens civic, but.... hmm no.

I'm using a FilterMag in conjunction with several early oil flushes (500, 1400, 2800 miles). On my 5500 mile UOA, I'm below Universal Averages in all wear metals except Copper, and it's trending down fast.

Is the magnet helping? I don't know. But it's certainly not hurting anything.

I don't think a magnet makes a measurable difference to engine longevity. If the improvement longevity was were measurable, I am sure manufacturers would jump on it, or filter manufacturers would include it on their engine oil filters. (Note that particle counts show measurable differences). BUT, it does appeal to the dark side in all of us, trapping that dark grey paste.

I just took a magnefine transmission filter apart after 4000 miles and there was a thin black paste on it. Filter pleats were clean! Now, if this was 4000 miles, i sure hope the pan magnets are big enough to catch 80,000 miles worth (20x)!

Trans magnets are certainly enough to get ya thinking of motor magnets! I was impressed by the monster magnets in the pans of the Fords I've done... Recently we did a Lexus with 4 little magnets.. I like the BIG one better.

I don't use Oil Filter magnets usually, but being a computer guy, if I can steal magnets out of hard drive, I'm there dude.

I'm in the boat that says it is harmless to use them, and it is likely going to make life easier on your filter.. keep it flowing freely toward the end of a change. I'm not a super long OCI guy.. but for the 10K guys, a magnet could keep the filter healthier longer.

Yeah, your filter would likely catch those... BUT, if you can keep it out of the filter, then it can flow easier.
