Lately I haven't been feeling all that great. Just kind of... Depressed, moody, and pessimisstic for no real reason. Saw my new PCD today, and told her about it. She said that it is likely Vitamin D deficiency because it's winter, and not alot of Sun, particularly UV radiation. She said it's common in the winter. So she told me to go out to CVS and get a bottle of Vitamin D3 supplement... And I feel a million times better now, 8 hours after. It's not the placebo effect, I actually feel much better. More energy, all that. So I highly recommend trying it, It really does help. Just my

You should look up "placebo effect." 8)

Someone recently told me the USRDA of vitamin D is about 4 times lower than many feel it should be.

Many of us feel the same way but we know the reason.....we're reminded of it every time we watch the news...

It is true; a lot of people get depressed in the winter. I think it is called seasonal affective disorder. That is why Northern latitudes have such a high incidence of alcoholism, because people get isolated and down psychologically from the dreary days and low-hanging light..

Besides Vitamin D, getting out in the sun is very helpful. Even if it is cold, and if the day is clear, get out under the sun, not too much though if you are prone to get a burn.

It takes 24-48 hours for the vitamins to be processed by the liver. Plus certain concentration has to be achieved first in order for it to start working properly. It might take anywhere between 3-10 days for the vitamins to take effect initially depending on concentration and dosage.

You're depressed 'cuz you live up north and freeze your arse off. Move to Florida and feel awesome!

I used to have that problem in western PA winters. Finally moved to Arizona...problem solved. Well, except for the winter sunburn.

Wife and I take Vitaman D3 daily during the winter months (2000 Units).

It makes a big differance for us here in the Northwest....We would highly recommend it.

Even in the summer....those of you who use 'sun block'...which blocks the Vitamin D fron absorbing...should use this supplment.

Arizona is out. Looking at that yugly Governor would be depressing. Rather stay here in Alabama and be depressed by the de-evolution taking place.

You're right. My mistake and mea culpa. Should have said this Marilyn Monroe lookalike Governor is reason enough for one to move to Arizona. Now I feel much better. Must attend confessional right away.

When I was getting checked out for breast cancer, one of the clues was that I had no vitamin D in my blood. No vitamin D = a compromised immune system. I have always had trouble with depression, especially in winter. My PCP had me taking 50,000 IU a week. I am taking 2000 IU a day now, along with a course of vitamins and stuff tailored for older men. Far as I know , it may be way too much, but I am happy and healthy.

As others have said, 8 hours just doesn't happen-it doesn't work that way. You've proven that you can be taken in by the placebo effect, and your depression is "all in your head".

If you really want to correct a vitamin D deficiency, rather than pop a pill and hope it works you can do the following:

1. Eat a balanced diet that includes fish.
2. Spend some time in the sunshine. Yes, it's winter but the sun still shines. It will also force you away from the computer where the only exercise you get is typing.
3. Exercise. In the sunshine. Outside. Yes, it's winter, and yes, it's cold. But bundle up, get out on a sunny day, and do some cross country skiing, snow shoeing, or even walk/jog a few miles. You'll feel great, you'll look better, you'll shed a few of those extra pounds, and you won't need to pop a pill and rave about a placebo effect.

Or you can continue to take a pill and pretend that it works.

If he feels better, is he pretending? If the intended result was to come out of his depression, I would say mission accomplished.
