ZOMG. The 2012 oil filter prophecy has come true!!!

BRB I'm going to round up my purolator filters and go stick my head in the oven!!!

+1

Thanks for the pics OP

I don't think that one has any bypass valve ... looks to be for a GM which has the bypass in the block.

+1 more. Add all the Puro 'made for' equivalents including ProMotive, AAP TG, Group7, PB ProLine, QuakerState, Pennzoil and Valvoline and others, all with very similar construction to the Classic.

The 3.3L V6 is a lower displacement version of the 3.8L Buick V6 and the oil filter bypass valve IS in the engine, not in the oil filter.
That filter looks to me like it suffered from the result of a sticking, plugged, or non-functioning oil filter bypass valve. On a car that old it would not be an uncommon failure. If it were my car I would replace that bypass valve ASAP.

Bad bypass valve ... maybe. But this failure was similar, and this filter had it's own bypass valve.

If the pleats have room to physically fold over that much (due to excessive open spacing), then the flow will fold them over and probably cause them to tear.

The Classic I showed in the link above had media that would tear very easily for some reason ... more so than on other Purolator filters I've ever cut open for inspection.

Looks like there is already a torn in media before it was placed in the can. It is hard to get some kind of quality control as these filters are made and assembled by machines.
