F150 vs 5th Gen Ranger

I read on this site that the front tire has to come off for an oil filter change. Is this true?

If so, I wouldn’t be interested in the least. F150 for sure or look into Tacoma or Frontier if you want midsize.

Answered above. 4 Fasteners and a rubber panel pops off, no need to take off wheel.

Frontier and Tacoma both come up short on towing, plus the Tacoma gets into F150 territory $$ wise to get you to the higher capability trucks.

Good to know on the oil filter. Wheel removal seemed a bit excessive.

If you’re worried about towing, I wouldn’t be looking at a midsize. That’s like buying a 25 hp tractor and arguing gear drive is better than hydrostatic because it has 1.5more HP at the PTO.. If that’s a concern, just go bigger.

No idea on current costs, but when my brother was vehicle shopping a few years ago, the dealer had a fully loaded Tacoma minus leather for 32k.

My main issue with the Ranger is how it has a van like front end.. much like the current Honda Ridgeline.

I'm not worried about towing exactly, BUT on the other hand, if we choose to get a small RV, I wanted the wiggle room to be able to get something we'd be happy with. There's more to it than just the 6800# vs 7500# Tacoma v Ranger difference, there's also about a 500# difference in payload capacity, which is a big difference when it comes to towing safely and within specs. Most of the Tacoma payloads that I've seen are 1200# VS the 17xx# I've got, (which is actually more than a 2020 F150 3.5 Ecoboost Lariat).

It all came down to a bunch of factors, looks being at the bottom of the list. I stand by my thoughts that a lot of people (Me included) don't need a fullsize truck. For 90% of its life doing 'truck things' its going to be hauling mulch, dirt, and wood for projects around the house. I didn't need an F150 and another $10,000 outlay for that.

Seems like a very handy size for a suburbanite owner. Not all that small, either. Barely smaller than a typical half-ton not so many years ago.

I can’t really complain that my full-size is too much truck.

Still, it’s a bit disheartening when I go to the Transfer station to pick up wood chips for garden mulch, shovel steadily for a solid hour and the bed is only 3/4 full.

I really like the new ranger but its priced more than a hemi ram 1500, of course the gas mileage is better.

Last time I checked we were still in Ranger hysteria mode. I think once the Bronco comes out Ranger prices will drop down to earth.

How is the ranger transmission?

Not sure how the Ranger compares in size to the GM twins, but this is the absolute largest truck I'd ever want. Sometimes it's even a little frustrating in tight parking lots. The garage at my house has a tool chest (2 ft deep) sitting at the front, and when I touch it with the nose of the Canyon, I have 3 inches to spare to close the door. An F-150 wouldn't fit my life in many ways. I'm thankful 'compact' trucks still exist.

Good looking Ranger, Ctechbob. Nice color choice.

The blue looks great.

I don't like the Fusionesque front end on the Ranger.

I do wish Ford would have done something to tie the styling into older models. I think the 89-92 Ranger really had the best styling, and 93-11 is just immediately recognizable to most people as a Ranger (though someone once called my 02 an F-150?). As far as styling the new ones don't seem connected to anything, but at least the styling is pretty subdued, and maybe even a little boring. I like that more than crazy shapes and some kind of transformer face.

As to which generation is best, Ford couldn't make the old ones anymore if they wanted to due to crash standards. New for new, yes I'd probably get a 1992 Super Cab 4.0 A4LD 4x4 in metallic green with tan or silver tu tone and XLT package over anything else, but Ford can't build and sell something like that as a new, street legal offering anymore. The current one isn't bad at all, and honestly given that we are talking about Ford they could have done something much more offensive with the nameplate. We're lucky the Ranger isn't Escape based.

Looking at the Ram site, $29,595 MSRP for a completely stripped 1500 classic tradesman with the V8. Regular cab, long bed. So yea I suppose you could get a hemi, but no one buys that truck. I was out the door for under $29,000 (Including the advelorum we pay here in GA).

Not saying you can't do it, but if you shop right and don't want a Lariat the Ranger is still a good deal. Loaded to the hilt at over 40K, no way, I'd look at a lower model fullsize.

typically (as in 4-5x last year) rams go for about 12-14k off and its not a percentage.
the bighorns in low 40's are more $$$$ off than the 60k models.
IIRC last november it worked out to the 43000 model was 29500
non-classic, bighorn level 2, hemi, otherwise pretty unoptioned but bighorn 2 has most of the goodies.

I did a quick check for someone the other day and it was still pretty close 12.5k off at the time.
Thats before actually dealing with the dealer.. the website price.

I priced a ranger 4x4 xlt and IIRC best I could do was around 34k.

I do expect the ranger discounts to grow much bigger once the full size bronco comes out, and the maverick wont hurt that either.

If only they had a MT, if I wait long enough maybe I'll snag a full size bronco or bronco squash. with the 7MT
