Hey guys I was thinking of getting an f150 later this year or the first of next year and was wondering since ford reccomends motor craft for their engines, can I swap it for M1 after the initial factory oci? I'm a huge advocate for M1 and pennzoil products but I don't like going against what ford says to put it in it. Should I just swallow my pride and stick to what ford wants?

I have absolutely no proof to back my opinion of what I'm about to say....but, I feel like M1 and pennzoil are superior to motorcraft which is why I feel like I should swap it basically. Again no proof to back my "feeling" here

Cross that bridge after you actually acquire the new ride.

Any of the brands you mentioned would be excellent. MC is a Ford branded product, so naturally that's what they recommend.

Should be fine to do. Lot's of people go to a full synthetic after break-in.

Legally Ford can't burn an owner's warranty for using another brand oil as long as the oil grade is that same, OCIs not overdue and oil level kept up.

Heard a bad story here about a gal and her Range Rover, never did oil top ups, ran it dry, trashed it, made a fuss and the dealer paid 50% for a new motor! She didn't deserve it!

I'm pretty sure no one here does that!! lol

Lol thanks guys. Another reason I ask is because every single person I know that owns a ford in general(car and truck) admit that they have never used motorcraft oil regardless of reccomendation. I get answers of Castrol Dino all the way to "what ever is on sale"

Nothing wrong with those answers either, as long as the oil meets the Ford Spec. I like Mobil 1 and PU, you can't go wrong with either.

My 2012 Flex that we just traded last labor day had only MC oil & filters x5 changes all at or near 0% OLM which equated to about 10k miles. When we traded it in it ran as good as new. My 01 Lightning , since putting in a built engine(approx. 700 flywheel hp) ran MC oil for past 13 years and 23k miles, although last oil change was Valvoline Synpower and will be going to Mobil 1 because of rebates.. Now our New Flex with ecoboost is getting treated a little different. Changed to Pennzoil Ultra via the kind Pennzoil folks on here and going about 6k miles or 40% left on OLM. My 94 Lightning was on MC but having oil leaks so switched to Valvoline Maxlife and has slowed the leaks. Over the past 10 years on our other vehicles has been mostly MC used.

I would bet all the tea in China that any proper rated oil from a quality blender syn or conventional as there is isn't any difference in wear. Also any quality oil filter from a quality manufacturer that there will be no difference in the engines life. Right off the bat the air cleaner and a sealed intake plumbing will make the most difference in engine life with all things equal.

I am running PP in my 5.0L F150
As long as the spec is met on the bottle you're good for warranty.
MC semi sym is Ford's oil of choice for just about all their engines.
I prefer to run a full syn and I like Pennzoil plus it meets Fords spec.

FYI. Just because Ford recommends Motorcraft it doesn't mean that is what is in the engine when it leaves the factory. Or that GM fills with AC Delco or Mobil1 or VW has Castrol. Oil is a bulk product and the supplier can change from time to time depending on the biding process.

Mobil 1 and Pennzoil Platinum both meet Ford specs & are 100% okay for Fords, even overkill. Ford doesn't require you to use Motorcraft. Look at all my Fords & what I use in those. Haha Run the factory fill 3,000-5,000 miles & then you can switch to the oil of your choice with no problems.

Pennzoil is a good choice!

Actually, Fords do have Motorcraft from the factory.

Please show us documentation that proves your claim. Just because the owners manual or oil cap says that a certain brand oil is the oil of choice doesn't mean that they are required to put in as factory fill. The product placement on the oil cap and owners manual are very similar to product placement in movies and TV shows. Advertisement is all it is.

Thanks for the info guys, I kinda of figured that the two choices I had in mind for when this time comes would more than suffice for the truck. The Walmart where I work only carries syn blend motorcraft oil and not full synthetic which I didn't know was the only flavor of that brand.

I run Motorcraft in my 2014 Mustang GT since new and plan to keep using it for the foreseeable future. It seems to work well and the car runs good on it.

Yep, M1 for 10k should be fine. I'm in the "thick oil" club and currently run 5w30 in mine. Got it with 21k miles and the first OCI was 5w20...no difference in mpg. I'm in the process of running 5w20, 5w30 and 0/5w40 for 10k OCIs to see if there's any difference in wear.

Ford F150 Manual says: Motoroils of the recommended viscosity grade that meet API SN requirements and display the API Certification Mark for gasoline engines are also acceptable.

Its in the notes at the bottom of the chart that "recommends" Motorcraft.

PS I take that to mean you have to use 5W30 SN GF5 in the Ecoboost and 5W20 SN GF5 in everything else.

I think I will run PP 5w-20 in the F150 that I hope to get soon. Most likely a M1 filter or a Wix XP. Does motorcraft even sale a full synthetic? The Walmart where I work only stocks synthetic blend.
