They hold up well but are very expensive....like $800 or more depending on the lens configuration. Also they will likely require several fitting/adjustments for comfort. My gal has had two pair and loves them. I prefer something less fragile myself.
 
You can buy frameless glasses with the online sellers or discounters pretty easily but it might depend on what you consider "frameless". I have a pair of semi-frameless ( frame attached at the top of the lenses and nose bridge ) that I bought for $75 at eyebuydirect.com. These have lasted me five years which is fairly unusual for me and would've easily cost me $250-$300 at a mall chain/optometrist.

It's easier when you know your PD and the dimensions that work for you including the width of the nose bridge. IMO, this eliminates most of the need for fittings and flatulence from an optometrist. I go to an optometrist for the exam and buy elsewhere and it always works out.
