Take a look at this Lube Report atricle about its upcoming base oils. Most notable are:

A new high VI Group I+ called "CORE 145" developed for the production of 10w40 oils for the European market.

A new Group III+ wax isomerate called "Visom" with a VI of 140. This base oil will be produced from GTL waxy feedstocks and is targeted for the production of 0w30 without the need of PAO in the base oil blend. (From what I can tell, this "Visom" is really the same thing Shell has been producing for years with its XHVI base oil.)

The biggest driver of base stock quality, he noted, is engine oil needs, such as fuel economy, longer drain intervals, property retention, soot-handling capabilities (for diesels), improved low-temperature performance and emissions reductions.

Very cool. This little tid bit points out the importance of the base oil.
