I have noticed that here in mid Michigan only Mobil has their own fleet of fueling trucks. Every other gas station uses a third party carrier. Now I know all gas is the same until the add pack is mixed in, but it seems my car runs better on Mobil fuel. I am wondering if it is due to tighter quality control, refining process, ect. Does Mobil have their own national fleet of trucks or is it dependant on area?

I've only used Mobil fuel one time when I was in the Chicago area. They seem to be a little higher than the others. What city do you live in?

Around the NYC/Metro area, Mobil seems to use their own branded trucks as well. Might also be a contract hauler, but Mobil wants their own dedicated trailers.

Here in Michigan I've seen generic tank farms and Mobil tank farms. I've been told that Shell also has their own tank farm. Thats 3 or more suppliers of raw fuel. Having a separate pipeline and tank farm isn't really necessary since branded fuel could be delivered in the same pipeline as unbranded fuel.

Postings on BITOG say that Shell station deliveries should be in Shell branded tankers and deliveries in unbranded tankers may be a cheap shot at earning an extra few bucks dispensing unbranded fuel since consumers wouldn't know the difference anyways. I've seen Shell tankers so not all stations use unbranded carriers.

When fuel testing I found that Mobil and BP have clear fuel as BP claimed in the ad campaign that got them in trouble. All the other brands I tested had yellow fuel just as you see in the BP Crystal Clear promotional material. BP uses trusted suppliers in areas where they do not supply their own fuel. I read somewhere that BP does not supply fuel to Michigan. I suspect Mobil is their trusted supplier here.

Have you tried BP to see if your car runs equally well?

unleaded is coloured purple down here...

I have tried the BP and it performed fairly well. Only thing that got me thinking was seeing all these unbranded tankers delivering to BP and other chains, while Mobil has their own clean blue labeled trailers. One thing is for sure my 3800 series III does not like Shell. I have consistantly tried various Shell stations, due to them being the only top tier in my area, and always noticed my fuel economy drops and my engine is slightly rougher on their fuel. Sunoco with 10% ethanol seemed to make my engine idle the smoothest.

Here's one to chew on: Mobil gas no longer exists> XOM sells the Mobil name to anyone who wants to buy it, and those stations may use whatever gas they want.
I love these butt dyno attestations of how Mobil runs well in various cars-pure malarchy

When I worked for a independent Exxon retailer in the NY/metro area with several repair shops/gas canopies, we still received some fuel from Exxon-owned delivery trucks/drivers. As the drivers retired out, Exxon started moving more and more deliveries to contract haulers. The gas was exactly same as per invoices, but Exxon realized significant cost savings as they moved to third-party contract-haulers.
