ExMo Chemical Expands PAO Supply

ExxonMobil Chemical on Monday announced availability of an additional 15,000 metric tons per year of high viscosity polyalphaolefins production to help the company meet growing demands for its PAO fluids.

The additional production was achieved through a custom manufacturing agreement with Albemarle, ExxonMobil Chemical spokesman Jeff Neu told Lube Report. Baton Rouge, La.-based Albemarle develops, manufactures and markets specialty chemicals.

“Demand growth for HiVis PAO is strong in all regions of the world,” Neu said. “Industrial lube demand continues to be strong for HiVis PAOs.”

U.S. producers of low-vis PAOs, which typically range up to 10 centiStoke in weight, include Chevron Phillips Chemical, ExxonMobil Chemical and Ineos Oligomers. Only two North American companies, ExxonMobil Chemical and Chemtura, have had manufacturing capacity to produce the high-viscosity grades, such as 40 and 100 cSt. These often are used as "correction fluids" to balance lower molecular weight PAOs and achieve viscosity targets.

ExxonMobil Chemical claims to be the world’s largest producer of PAO products. Its offerings range from 2 cSt to 1,000 cSt, and are part of a synthetics portfolio that includes alkylated naphthalenes.

Wonder why XM would increase PAO production when Mobil 1 oils are Grp 3 base stock according to some of the x-perts here at BITOG. WINK! WINK!

Other uses of high viscosity PAO's are for gear lubes, high temp chain lubes, way lubes, greases, etc.

Yup, lots of uses for heavy PAOs due to their shear stable thickening, thermal stability, and VI synergies, although there are better choices for high temperature chain oils as PAOs can be heavy cokers in thin film high temperature environments.

For chain use Hatco has some Advanced POEs with low reactive hydrogen content that are exceptionally stable and clean. Lighter versions were patented and are used in the latest 4th generation jet engine ols. See patents below:

I think that Mobil 1 Extended Performance uses these fluids as 'correctors' to make the EP line more robust - correct?

Do you think that more oils in general will start using small amounts of these as well as additives to help with stability and stay-in-grade performance?
 
Yes heavy PAO is one of (if not the) components of their "SuperSyn System", with dosages probably less than 10%.

Heavy PAOs are very expensive, especially in terms of $/centistoke, so there are much cheaper alternatives for thickening and most oil producers are very cost conscience.

If I understood the article correctly, ramping up of production has little to nothing to do with anyone's synthetic engine oils including Mobil's own M1. The article clearly said the demand in the industrial segment of the economy was pushing demand. The need for high-performance PAOs in industrial equipment(plant machinery) that rarely stops for maintenance is what is driving demand. It has little to do whith their own production of "synthetic" engine oils.(Or anyone else's)
