My friend sold (traded in) his S-10. It had clean, bright Dex-Cool in it without problem.

I had the dreaded manifold gasket leak on my old s10. I replaced the gasket with the new and improved one, flushed the cooling system and went back with super tech version of dexcool. Zero problems with dexcool since then. Problem was the old plastic gasket. Not dexcool.
I just replaced the thermostat in my 06 Malibu that still had the original Dexcool in it. From what I could see it was absolutely like new inside. No corrosion, not scale, no dirt. I drained what I could and put new GM Dexcool back in.
I have a 99 Dodge in my drive way with the original green coolant. Works fine but I don't bother to even look at it.

Right. It was the gaskets fault it was dissolved by the Dexcool. It was not the Dexcool's fault that it dissolved the gasket.

There are all sorts of potential material incompatibilities, particularly when one or more are at elevated temperatures. Why the vitriol for Dexcool?
I don't have any vehicles that use it (unless Toyota red, Honda Type 2 or BMW blue are in disguise), but if the elastomer or polymer materials in my engines were incompatible I would expect bad things to happen.

No , it's the gasket . Dexcool worked well in many other engines ... it was the ones with the faulty gasket that had problems .

I like how people in the comments are blaming mixing green coolant with DexCool when the car clearly has DexCool in the overflow tank.

Yes, it is quite clear. GM had whole families of engines that never had an issue. Now other mfgrs are using Dex. It's not the source of the problem.
And imagining that no one ever used the wrong coolant in a dex car is a long shot also....
