Just picked up a brand new 2009 Nissan Versa for the wife and it currently has 25 miles on it. She has a 20 mile drive (one way) to her job so I was thinking on pulling the factory fill at 1,000 miles and going with a synthetic. I searched the forum and couldn't find anything on the nissan 1.8L 4 cylinders on here. What oil recommendation would you guys make for this car?

I was thinking 6 months or 10k what ever comes first.

Whats the sump size on the 1.8? Is is still 2 7/8 quarts like my old 1.8 Sentra? I would recommend changing the oil at 1,000 like you said. Then I would do 5k/6 month, which every comes first.

I use do 5K dino OCI's on my Sentra. I was driving 23 miles all highway to work. The OCI's were better with 76 dino oil, then with Mobil 1.

wm1998,

Since her car is so new I'd wait at least until your first oil change is in order. That's what I did in my 01' Durango V-8 at first for the first year and then went to synthetic only after it appeared no engine issues were at hand.

If you not sure of the engine weight then red it up in your manual. You might even ask your dealership if they offer a synthetic of their choosing and if it meets all your needs then have them do it for you.

Under cooperation with my dealership I bring them the oil of my choosing and have then use it and then just buy the OEM filter they use. My standard oil os Mobil 1 synthetic 5w30.

Durango

I'm guessing it's a 5w20..so I'll say buy the cheapest you can find. Because it's new you'll probably not want to do extended OCI.. do to wear metals. Gradually build up to a 4000-5000 mile OCI on dino.

I too would wait even maybe 2 OCI before making the switch. it's very important that the engine wears in properly. Look at the mobil 1 EP products, Amsoil or with the rather small sump you could even save using Redline 5-30 will probably work well for you in synthetic

WoW !! That is a small sump. Thankful my suzuki Aerio pocket wagon has 5 quart sump with its' 2.3 liter engine.

Sump with filter is 4.2 Quarts. It calls for a 5w30. I was thinking just regular Amsoil 5w30. Nissan calls for 6k oil changes with dino so I thought 10k or 6 months would be pretty easy with a quality synthetic?

I thought most engines would be broken in after 500 miles? I would like to swap out the dino at 1000 and put in some Amsoil. Also, why would dino need to be in for the break in period anyway? Doesn't Chevy use Mobil 1 as factory fill?

If I change the oil, how would they even know? Also, even if I paid a quick lube or walmart to change the oil do I need to keep receipts?

The dealer charges something like 27.99 for an oil change. That is nuts for a 4 quart sump!

I'm glad Nissan made the sump bigger on the 1.8L.

You never said if your wifes commute is highway or city driving? I wouldn't go 10K on any kind of oil with only 4.2 quart sump. Drain the factory oil at 1K. Fill it with 5w30 dino. Drain again at 5K. Then put whatever oil you want in for 5K/6 month OCI's. You don't really need synthetic in this engine.

My wifes communte is roughly 45-55 mph (20-miles each way) but there are a few stop lights on the way. I think her commute should be very easy on the oil.

How long do you guys typically keep the factory fill in the car? It is a 2009 model so has this car had the same oil in the sump for 1.5 years while it has sat at a dealership?
