so i have been taking care of my neighbor's kia specta for a few years now. you might have seen me post about it once or twice. it started out a sludger when i started taking care of it and after manual cleaning and a year of 5k ocis with Castrol High Mileage it seemed to be good and clean. because she drives 100 miles a day (all highway), and it has 150k on it now, i decided to switch her to synthetic with a distance plus filter and work up to 10k ocis.
the first run was with PP and at 4k it was 1/2 a qt low. we added a pint of MMO and pushed it to 5k. next run was PU, at 5k it had used a qt and 9k it had used 1/2 a qt. i added a pint of MMO and changed it at 10k. this run is PU and the car has 6k on it with no consumption yet. is it just me...or could the engine actually be doing better now than before with the extended drains??

Seems to me most sludge problems arise in cars that see city driving, unless the OCI has been totally ignored. 100 miles a day on the highway isn't hard service (unless you are running 85 with a small engine which is working hard)

It isn't the extended drains per se - it's the hot highway running, a quality 'cleaning oil', and the MMO that are doing it. You are cleaning the ring-packs, 'feeing them up', and oil consumption is dropping.

Good job - any chance of a used oil analysis on one of those runs?

Nice story indeed. Now if only you'd skipped the MMO, it would've been a winner in my book.

I like hearing you have cut down on cunsumption. Thats great.

Nothing, some people just can't stand that some other people find it useful.

I've not tried cleaning with a good full syn, but dino and MMO cleans much better than dino alone, even HDEO, I can tell you that!

+1 !!! Anytime there is a mention of one of the more popular additives and there is SOMEONE popping in the thread going " ohh MMO is [censored] " or " leave MMO on walmart shelf " . Dude , we get it , you dont like it , no one is asking you to use it. OP is sharing his exp and according to him , whether it is a good quality syn or MMO+Syn thats working.
Because he used MMO does not make his combo a loser. In fact he actually used it multiple times and the results kept getting progressively better. In his situation at least, this combo is a winner !

Just for grins I was going to run some MMO before my next change in the 220k mile 3.8l Caravan. I figure I cant hurt it any. Is 8oz good or would 16 oz be preferred for a 5 quart sump? How long should I run it before changing?

8 ounces isn't going to do anything. I'd add a pint and run it at least 1000-1500 miles, or longer. They recommend up to 20% for the full OCI. But I've done exactly what I mentioned above with good results.

20% of the total sump, it does thin oil out so might be a good idea to use a slightly thicker dino/syn-blend. GTX HM/Rotella T5 10w30 would be a great oil to mix with MMO. And I agree with a 3k OCI w/ a good quality filter.

16oz is fine - if you are using 5w30 or thicker.
If running 0/5W-20, eight ounces is what I use. Then pour the other eight ounces in your fuel tank that contains 10+ gallons

I concur, a pint is enough to make it worthwhile, having tried more I now consider 20% a maximum and 10-15% ideal. Slow and steady is the way to go.

Thanks for the info. 16 ounces it is then. Currently Im running 10w30 in the van that is spec'd for 5w20 so the thinning that is created should not be an issue on this round.

the first time i added the mmo was for cleaning. i figured it would be a good idea before going to 10k drains. the last time i added it was because a pint of MMO is $3 and a qt of PU is $7. im gonna give most of the credit to the PU for cleaning the ring pacs. im not sure how much cleaning MMO can do in 1k

.

as far as the UOA, it will probably not happen. i have the sample set and all, but cant see spending my own money to check her oil......but curiosity might get the best of me

this car used to have sludge problems, but it was because she was only changing the oil once a year. i think 12k on dino is a bit much, even if its all highway

update

just changed the oil again on it. no sludge or discoloration yet with 10k intervals. this run will be with PP and a fram, so it will get changed at 5k.( she got it on sale at autozone)

the consumption is still down from when i first started....so thats a plus! i think the car will fall apart before the motor does

So you are saying only pro-MMO posts should be allowed here?

Years ago I tried MMO in an old Toyota. Followed direction 5 qt sump. I notice a lack of lubricity in hard driving when the oil was heated. When cold(no cold starts here) it did ok, in fact quite good. But once it's heated I could feel the MMO was lacking lubricity in hard heated driving. I tried in once but haven't been to comfortable using again because of the lack of lubricity in heated oil.

no one is saying that. but you dont have to bash every post that mentions mmo. there have been alot of people that use it with good results and a few used oil analysis. no its not needed in a car that has been well maintained. do what you like. but it helps sludge clean up! period!!!

it WILL drop your oil a grade. maybe thats what you experienced???? if a 30 is needed, maybe you should start with a 40 and add MMO to that.

i really like adding a pint to 5qts at the last 500 or 1000 miles of a 10k oci....but thats just me
