I did a forum search with not a single posting on evinrude hpf-xr drive gear lube.

Reading an website boating magazine test review of various drive gear lubes the evinrude hpf-xr did very well when looking at all testing methods. Then when I look price I was stunned. Merc gear oil is about 8/liter, Mobil 1 is about 10/liter and 32oz of the evinrude gear oil is less than 10.00!

Using merc or Mobil 1 would cost me 20.00 more per service. I couldchange gear oil twice as often and still save money when using the evinrude lube.

I guess the next best cost effective method would be a gallon of Lucas gear oil. But I haven't seen/read about marine use.

What is your .02?

I have always used automotive GL5 80W90 conventional in all my marine lower units. It's changed every year anyway, so no need for the high $ stuff.

Merc Rep told me at a boat show that it's all ther same stuff anyway

Edit--- 32oz is one liter. So the price is not as good as I thought but I am still curious about the product

I did read on a vendor website in fine print "not for automitve use". Couldn't find any other info. I guess it's not formulated for long term car use. Boats is one year / 100hrs which I very different than a car.

They say it's not for automotive use to try and differentiate it so they can charge more. It's the same stuff as the auto. What in it could possible make it not usable in an automotive app?

The test I read said this lube performed the best when mixed with water to simulate a leak. My pure guess is that what ever additive makes it work better than others could cause wear or the breakdown of the lube could case wear in a car that never gets drained. cars see 200k miles before gear drive fluid replacement.

But in short IDK.

Merc has 2 different gear oils,1 is Hi Performance which is a syn blend and the cheaper of the 2 is called premium.

Marine gear cases are sealed units unlike auto diff's.The marine gearcase can handle a gear oil that has a tendancy to foam alot. When the oil foams it builds pressure beyond what the seals can handle blowing gear oil out of a seal or seals and drawing water back in.You may get by running auto gear oil in a low hp low rpm outboard.Im sure the actual lubricating properties are close.
