Just picked up a new Everstart Maxx group 78 battery today, it doesn't have any vent caps but the sticker says JCI and distributed by Clarios. It looks identical to the East Penn cases I've seen at O'Reilly on their Super Start batteries. Could this be an East Penn, using the wrong part number ID (JCI) ?

Clarios bought out Johnson Controls this year. JC have made em like that for a while. I highly doubt those are East Penn made. East Penn made batteries are designated EP. Also EP made Walmart batteries seem to be located more on the east side of the country.

Crazy thing was there were these ventless style 78's along side more traditional group 78 Johnson Controls cases with the recessed caps...all with date codes of 11/19 and 12/19. All in the same display.

Says Clarios (formerly JCI) on the battery. Serial number starts with JC, indicating JCI. As noted by FordBronco.. East Penn starts with EP, at least in the Maxx batteries. This one out of the ordinary JC octagonal cap design though.

The serial number gives it away. The East Penn Everstart start with an EP, at least the ones I have seen at my Mass Walmart.

This serial number starts with a JC so I assume JCI.

I suggest moving to the East Coast so you can get East Penn Everstart batteries.

If it was on the west coast it would have to be West Penn? (joke).

Is it possible that JCI had a production shortage or damaged (truck wreck) so they bought some overflow stock from EP for fill the order quickly?

Not very profitable near term but I'm sure poppa walmart has such tight screws on them that they had to do what the had to do to keep the contract.

Given how Walmart deals with vendors I would assume they always like to have more than one vendor involved for items they purchase. And then they push the vendor to compete against each other.

The Everstart East Penn batteries I have seen are in Mass so they would be built for a cold climate. Maybe East Penn builds the cold climate batteries and JCI the hot climate batteries. Just a guess.
