Esurance rant

I thought the price they quote is guaranteed for 6 months. I wonder if calling the State [your state's] Insurance Board and complaining would get you anywhere.

You would think so, but all you get is trained monkeys who tell you they need to "research" the issue and will get back to you.

In order to best determine the reasons for the recent increase, we've forwarded your policy information to our underwriting department for a detailed review. We will contact you within a few days with the results of the analysis.

FYI, this is from the original policy terms and conditions:

Quote:
If there is a change to the information used to calculate the policy premium, “we” may adjust “your”
premium. Changes during the policy term that may result in a premium increase or decrease include, but are
not limited to, changes in:
A. The number, type, or use classification of insured vehicles;
B. Operators using insured vehicles;
C. The place of principal garaging of insured vehicles; or
D. Coverage, deductible, or limits.

None of the above took place, but the "are not limited to" basically gives them card blanche to change premiums for any reason they want.

Had Geico for five years and never really looked.

Moved to Texas and kept them.

Found a broker here who is local, and has been in business for 75 years.

They compared 20 insurers, and got me better coverage for about $300 cheaper per year.

Also they saved me $700 per year on my homeowner insurance.

Find a broker, and let them do the work.

Yep. Brokers are not 'captive' and sell various policies from different insurance companies.

did you factor in 30% is returned?

If they changed your premium even though the underwriting assumptions have not, it seems like they need better insurance regulations in your state.

+1 for Geico btw.

Do they guarantee 30% return? I only saw mention of 20% on their website.

In my case, their policy would cost me $3,170 annually. That would be $2,536 after a 20% return. And the quote didn't even mention anything about it being a dividend policy. Possibly their dividend policy would cost even more.

Meanwhile the same policy would be $1,980 from Liberty Mutual.

Sorry, I mispoke the dividends are 25% and 20%, not 25% and 30%; the dividends are dependent on the type of policy (eg home, car, etc) 20% so sound like the auto. All the policies pay dividends.

If LM is more affordable then go with them for sure; I haven't shopped around in years; since i drive beater cars now, a few hundred one way or another is not worth casting aside 30+ years with my insurance company. I have filed about 3 claims in that time and never have had to do any griping or complaining about any of the claims.

UPDATE:

I finally got them to admit that they've made an error. As I suspected, at the time I purchased the policy, they had the Q5 not rated correctly in their system, and hence the initial low rate. Since this was their error (duh!), they agreed not to increase my premium for the current term.

But that still means that when it's renewal time in a month or so, they'll want to charge me premium that is almost double what my current premium is. No thanks. I'll be moving to another insurer.

You have a month to find a better company with lower premium.

I have Mercury with fairly low premium, but they operate only in Western states.

You should be checking companies that are not ad-heavy (pretty much all the ones previously mentioned in this thread). Two off the top o' me head are Auto-Owners and Erie Insurance.

Yeah... I used to have erie and liked them but they dont do business in michigan. Looks like i'll be going with LM, at least until they jack up their rates too.

Seems to be the norm with insurance companies. After a while ... they just randomly raise your rates.

I talked a friend of mine into getting ESurance recently. He was with progressive but they randomly raised their rates so he switched.

I'm interested in seeing how much his rates go up. He hit a snowbank and did a few thousand in damage to the car. (Would have been cheaper to buy snow tires but ...).

Pete, I got my renewal notice this week. My premium is increased 3% or $37. Still a huge savings for me compared to my previous experience with Travelers through an agent. I saved over $1000 per year making the move. So far, so good.

Yeah, in my case, they simply screwed up. They had the Q5 completely miscategorized, giving unusually low premium rates. Half way through my first 6-month term, they realized their mistake, recategorized it, and tried to recoup their losses by jacking up my rates for the current term.

Why should I be penalized for their mistake? We signed a 6-month policy and both parties should abide by it.

I used to have Travelers until it got too expensive, then had LM for a year until I learned they don't care about their money so I wasn't going to give them any more of mine. Basically, I know of a situation with a local school district who has and is using them as insurer for several lawsuits against the outgoing superintendent. I have a copy of the policy and reported fraud to LM. LM didn't care. So I switched to Metlife at a lower rate yet.
