Esso XD-3 - reducing Oil consumption

Thanks Cyprs, BlazerLT...

The engine is on a '99 Dodge Intrepid, 2.7L.
Runs tops! Quite powerful, smooth and quiet.
190,000 Km. Looks like a highway commuter for most of it's life, I only recently purchased this car. Really can't tell if it is sluged up, but from what I read about it, it is an engine prone to that around the timing chain oil passages?!?

Right now using GC 0-30 with an AC filter, however I did have to top up a bit on oil, the engine did use about 1/2 litre over the last 1,500 km... as far as I can tell not dripping, I think it is a bit excessive.

So the 40 weight xd-3 might come in ok?

If your manual states a 10-40 is good for ambient temps over -18C on chart then you should be okay, there is no concern on flow rate, both 0-30 and 0-40 XD3 syn flow at -48C. I have been wisely informed on this forum to becareful not to use too thick an oil in the smaller Import engines in 4 cylinders that I drive, I was just passing that on to you P2E2F.

Your manual or dealership should tell you whether a 30 or 40 weight is preferred year round as does Nissan on 30 weight.

I run 40 weight now in summer on a 200K+ 1980 Datsun truck, clearances allow a heavier oil now in that one and it is a 4 banger, your six cylinder should be fine at 190K with a 40 weight.

This 0-40 oil works great in my Cummins diesel year round, that oil treats pretty large clearances compared to a smaller gasser. One fella I know uses 0-30 XD3 year round in his 2000 Dodge Cummins, (I wouldn't in my 92 Cummins, I go 40W) and it gets up to +42C here in summer, this 0-30 XD3 is no slouch of an oil to stand up to that summer heat in a Cummins with it's large clearances.

I would honestly replace your PCV valve if you are seeing oil consumption like that.
