Engine/Tranny Longevity ? How far can they go ?

Nowadays we are routinely seeing cars go 150,000 - 200,000+ miles.

Given proper routine maintainence, how far can car gasoline engines (bearings, rings, cylinder walls, valves etc...) and trannys (clutch packs, synchros, gears) go before giving up the ghost ?
 
With proper car a long time even "older" cars.

My parents got 240k out of an 86 AMC Eagle without any internal work to transmission or engine. It ran when sold they just tired of it (no AC).

My mom's 1988 Suburban 2500 4wd she traded in 2000 for a Subaru Forester. GMC had 250k miles ran perfectly and never had any internal engine or transmission work.

She simply maintained vehicles at local garages.
 
All my V8 Fords since 1985 went over 200K miles with the original Engine/Tranny..My 88 Town Car went over 300K miles with the original Engine/Tranny..Plus they were all rental cars for about 15-20K miles before I got them

All cars had their Tranny Fluid changed out every 30K miles by the Ford dealer plus [for the most part] they were serviced by Ford for everything.
 
My 1994 LS400 has more than 270k miles without any work on the engine or transmission other than spark plugs, timing belt and other minors. Trans fluid had been changed twice only.
 
I got over 250k out of my early to mid 90's buicks. They went to the bone pile when the trans died. I have seen several cars with over 250k on the original motor and trans in my time.
 
How far can engines and transmissions go?

Far longer than seats, air conditioners, steering parts, window lifts, dashboards, and all those other bits and pieces that add up quickly!
 
Anywhere from 200,000 - 1,000,000+. Tons of variables come into play. The body of a car or electronics are just as likely to get a car scrapped.
 
I've always either junked or sold them before 100k miles. If I got one already over 100k, usually it got resold quickly.
