Engine issues

When it's idling high, unhook the intake at the throttle body and see of the throttle blade is is opened a bit. That might point to the TPS as well.

Here's my plan...

1. I'm going to replace the TPS ( ~$32 part on rockauto)

Hopefully this will fix my idle issues. I trust the guys at saturnfans.com; They have been right 90% of the time in my experience.

2. I'm going to pull a used oil analysis on my next oil change after the current fill around 3,000 miles.

This used oil analysis would be on the third fill of Formula Shell 5w30. I'm confident this will give me a pretty clear look into my engine.

I don't want to guess as to what is going on or stress out. I'm gonna let the used oil analysis tell me what is going on and use the facts to direct me in the right direction. If I have a coolant leak, I will fix the head gasket.

If my intake manifold is the problem I'll wait until it causes a misfire and throws an engine code.

I am going to request a free Blackstone lab test kit.

- If I start having to add coolant at this point, I will pull a used oil analysis on the current fill and trust that the coolant contamination will make itself clear due to excess engine wear.

This car has not had a single repair since it rolled off the lot. I replaced the ECTS at 100k miles for preventative maintenance. The previous owner kept every receipt and the car has never had a repair (ok, ok, the muffler strap broke once.)

Not too bad to get 109,000 miles on a car that cost under $12,000 brand new without a single issue.

I would hope to get another 50,000 miles out of this car. However, it would take force for me to hand over a check for over $1000 to replace the cylinder head on a car worth $1,995. (a cylinder head replacement would be a bigger job than I would want to tackle on my own).

In fact, most folks over at saturnfans.com just relace it with a junkyard engine. In many cases they can get used engines from junkyards for less than opening it up and performing surgery.

If it does end up being a head gasket or a cracked head, you might try using a product like in this thread. The stuff works, and it's a heckuva lot cheaper then pulling the head on a car with little value. If my 94 Corolla ever develops a head gasket leak, I'll be using that stuff pronto. A head gasket replacement or a new head would cost more then what the cars worth.
