Endless Windows 7 Updates. Help!

Starting about a week ago, I began getting Windows 7 messages at logoff to permit installation of updates. First night; got one update, next night 16 more, then 48 more, a 100 more,then 1000, and finally 3162 more updates! (Also it asks if I want to analyze Windows NT). What's up with all these updates? Is this for real or some kind of malware?

Windows 7 Home (premium), Dell laptop. Running Adfender ad blocker but turned off on first and subsequent log offs. Ran Malwarebytes and Panda Cloud malware detectors/removers but nothing was detected. Any ideas?
 
Go to the updates web site and see if they are legit. I haven't read anything lately about huge Win 7 updates but could be.

I foolishly switched to Win 8 last spring now I am watching for a day I can use to reload 7, but there will be a TON of updates.
 
Go to Windows Update in your start menu and post a screenshot of what is shown there after "check for updates" is run.
 
I have seen systems re-run updates for some reason. I can't remember exactly but it was something like a HD failure and the drive was messed up, and whatever kept track of updates was where some of the damage was. So a while after that the whole system croaked.

How old is the hardware?
 
Doesn't sound right to me. I have 253 updates installed on my machine running windows 7 pro 64 bit. Looking through my update history, a good chunk of those 253 updates are for MS Office 2010.
 
Do you have install optional updates checked as well as the important updates, or just the important updates? I only installed the important updates, even so 3,100+ updates is a lot, something sounds wrong.
 
I always have it setup so it will download but ASK me before i let it install them.
I get small updates very often like every 2-3 days but they're all for windows defender.

I only get "packets" of updates only every month or so.
(win 7 pro 64 bit)
I only let it install ones marked as "important"

That's what I'd do, wipe the drive completely and start over. As long as the data is backed up all he'd be doing is killing a little time and odds are solving his problem.
 
He would DEFINITELY have updates if he reloads.

I wonder about the 'analyse Windows NT ? Did the OP get a disk check or something?

You really can't tell much if you don't look around and see what's going on, like in the event viewer, etc.

It does sound a little suspicious.
 
It says "do not turn off or unplug your machine.... installing update 1 of xxx". Turned off machine after it was done and got message it was updating 40 more! Came back several hours later, turned it back on and it said something about installing 1786 of 1786...
Took about 15 min. for it to boot up(after it was done "configuring windows-don't turn off your computer")
Computer runs great other wise. Like nothing happened. It appeared my update problems started after I installed free anti malware. Computer seemed to run very slow, so I uninstalled the malware detector and it ran much faster except for all these updates. Perhaps the uninstall did something. No messages indicating problems with the machine or other weird "stuff" going on. Very bizarre...
 
Are you positive that was number of updates, and not a process that was occurring after a reboot and before login?

Some updates show a bunch of stuff after reboot and I'm thinking this might be what you have seen.
 
Subdued makes a good point, I feel like when I've watched my computer apply updates during the boot process, it displays some very high numbers.

I'm curious.. If you go to Start, Control Panel, Programs and Features, View Installed Updates, there should be a number of total updates installed at the bottom of the screen. The number might take a few seconds to finalize, I'm curious to know what number is displayed there, like I mentioned earlier for me it's 253 updates.

That is a good way to check it out. I just did two fresh installs of Win 7 and only took the important updates. IIRC it was well under 300 checking it the way you suggested.
