What do you think of the use of Emoticons in a post? It certainly is not professional, and the people on here whose opinions I respect do not use them. Then again a picture says a thousand words...

Since when was anyone worried about professionalism in an online forum? It's not as though any of us make a living here.

I like them. It surely adds personality to the forums.

Story: I took an online course, and we had discussion boards every week (that was our "attendance" lol)....nobody would smile, lol, nothing....finally I posted a wink and they were like is that? Like they didn't know about emoticons. really true story

So then it became a lesson on early internet communications...."ok ladies, turn your head sideways THEN look at it again" (most of them were ladies) lol.

I think they can be kind of excessive (BITOG has too many in my opinion) but when used correctly, they help get your message across with the right meaning. A necessary evil in today's text-centric communications.

Hate 'em.
IMHO, they just make a post look silly.
If you can't convey your intended meaning without using smilies, think a little harder when you write a post.

What's the big deal anyway? Do they bother you THAT much? It's very hard to express your emotions with just a pile of text. A smiley face here or there adds some personally to it

College courses (if that is to what you are referring when you say "online course") have a different etiquette than informal forums such as this. I certainly do not use emoticons on the discussion forums in my MSCIS program as I would undoubtedly have points taken off for this and it is clearly noted in the syllabus for the class.

However, I think as long as the forum in question is an appropriate setting then emoticons can help give expressions to words on a page. E-mail/online posting in general is the least effective form of communication because the receiver cannot see the sender's body language or intonations within his/her voice by viewing text on a page.

Just my thoughts...

I don't agree with what you say,

I'm not sure why emoticons would upset anyone. Of course, they can be overused and misused. The only time I find them bothersome at all is when someone says something rude and then follows it up with a "
smile.gif
" as if that makes it OK.

But I do love it when someone posts something contentious, and then someone comes along and simply posts:

I personally dont use them. I dont mind the simple ones but i do not like the animated ones. Im not downing anyone that uses them but i dont really like them and wish they weren't here. There is only a hand full of forums that i frequent and they are forums i have a lot of respect for. There just pointless if you ask me.

This one is probably my favorite......lol it's appropriate for when someone mentions a hated "snake oil" product on this site such as Lucas.
