This seems more like human error than car problem. Car runs fine and passes smog otherwise with botched timing? More of a over-confident human issue than a car issue...

Cars with non adjustable timing do not get that portion of the test performed. Just like cars in enhanced areas that get a dyno test do not have an EGR functionality test because the dyno test includes NOx which is not measured in the TSI test.

Do you know where I may find that in print to use?

Thanks

smogcheck.ca.gov all the info a smog shop would use is right there. I took all the classes and got up to the point of taking the test for a smog license when new rules came out that drastically increased the fines on testers if they made mistakes. It wasn't worth going to jail for making a mistake on a smog check.

Found it

For a smor test, does anyone know how long it takes to reset the computer after shutting off a check engine light?

I had a hose crack between the injector and some can

This is specific to the vehicle and operating conditions. It is supposed to be doable in 12 minutes if you drive the car in a certain pattern but it doesn't really work that way in reality. Maybe someone here will know what is typical for your car.

If you're allowed one not ready (I don't know about your state) most cars will go ready if you do mixed city/highway driving for a half hour after a cold start. There are some (older Hyundais and Nissans come to mind) that will go ready the first time you cycle the key off and then on again and some cars (a particular Jaguar XK comes to mind) that will never go ready and cannot ever pass an OBD test.

If you have a code reader it would be a simple matter to check readiness yourself. If not, there are auto parts store who will check for you. In general, 3 days of "normal" driving will usually be plenty.

Well just went to Kia.
He said it's not adjustable, go to the smog place across
The smog place agreed but when he looked he said my car is adjustable timing
Back to Kia and they agreed.
Said maybe it was a mid year 96-97

You distributor is the exact one in the 1995, it has elongated holes in the base so you can adjust in relation to the rotor. The 98 and up 1.8 have different system which is not adjustable.

You guys are forgetting a 4 cycle engine requires 720* rotation for a full cycle, if timing is reading as 90* off, it can't be much else other than a slipped harmonic balancer or the crank pulley is indexed improperly... since this is a 4cyl and not 8cyl, 180* off would put it on the next cylinder in the firing order, 90* only gets you half way there...

Sorry... I read the comment on the dist timing being 90* out and brain registered it as crank....

, same still applies as mark is still only one cyl off... Maybe they did attach the timing light to incorrect cylinder???

It is possible, but lets be real about this guy at the Emissions place. He probablly does a metric butt ton of cars a day. How hard can it be to hook up to the number one wire on a 4 Cyl? I could see messing up a V-6 or V-8. His timing is off mechanically.

Edit: See his post in the new thread.

Thanks for the help!
I passed the test.
New rotor and cap
The called for new NGK plugs 1 range hotter than was in the car
The HC went down but (only) by 3 points so I passed by 4 points (low speed)

High speed HC went down quite a bit

All other numbers went up from passing by 50% to passing by 25%
