Electric chain link fence?

I'm moving into a new shop right across from my old one, in an industrial part of town. In this place I have outdoor storage, where I didn't before. Crime has been a serious problem in the area lately. I'm usually there at night packing a .357 but I can't be there 24/7....

Anyway, I want to put up a chain link fence about the size of a dog run to keep things in. This will keep out the casual theif but not anybody with wire cutters. Would it be possible to hook up a standard electric fence charger to the entire section of chain link?

Would the whole thing have to be insulated from the ground in some way?

PS - does anybody know if there are any legal limits on the output power for elctric fences? I've got three phase power...

You can have an electric fence, just go to a farm supply store and buy the electric fence stuff. I think it's legal so long as you have clearly stated warning and it isn't enough to kill anyone but just stun them to keep them away.

You might also want to get the one that sounds an alarm as well so it is a deterrent and notifies any cops that might be in the area. (It's to warn farmers of possible escaping cattle)

I would also use barbed wire at the top like Airport fences do to make it obvious that they should keep out.

What about a camera too? Going too far?

Yeah, but who decides how much is too much?

Do they they sell "extra high power" fence chargers? What does the zoo use to keep the elephants in?

I just looked up some razor wire too...I'd like to use some of that if I can find a local source.

Definately cameras and alarms too. I actually saw this shop get robbed, they cut the wires on the security light and I noticed but I thought the bulb had burned out. They took some tools that were outside in the area I want to fence. Crime seems to be really bad lately for some reason, I've been pulled over FOUR times now because I leave the shop at 3-4 AM usually. That's my only offense...*sigh* (Why do you work so late? I don't know, why are you working so late officer? Why do you have a gun? Why do you have a gun officer? And yes, that's a propane tank in the back, those aren't illegal.

)

The fence electricity output is adjustable. Farmers use the same fields for other animals at other times and too much is not enough depending on the animal.

They even sell a solar powered one. One of the farmers here has it and let me tell you it zapped the $#!@ out of me. I can still remember swearing.

I do some IT work on the side and there is a roofing company in Vaughan that I do work for at night in the middle of the night because they can't afford downtime in the daytime. So I leave at 3,4 or 5am when I'm done from an industrial park and I get pulled over all the time and harassed. I show them the key I have and the guy always wants to see a business card and I tell him that I do it on the side and don't really have a business setup. I have to wait usually while they run my name etc. I asked them many times to put a note in their computer but it's not possible aparently.

Yeah criminals really drive Hyundai Santa Fe's with a Quiznos Delivery, Amsoil synthetics and a Gay Pride sticker on the back of them with keys to business in different cities from where I live at 4am. They also pull over quietly and talk with the officers with respect.

These guys aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer.

LOL, exactly my problem. Good thing I don't have any warrants.

The funny thing is the first time the officer didn't even ask my name, or for my license or insurance, I could have been driving a stolen truck.

Another time he took my license but still no truck papers. I could have stolen it again. I guess they put the new officers on the night shift....

Edit: Ironically I'm moving because I think the previous occupant got arrested. I don' think it relates to anything in the area though.

more than likely the officers already have noticed your car/truck night after night and just wanted to see what you were about or see what your up to.

for the most part police officers have a very tough job, going from boring to way to exciting in seconds.

they take abuse and are to remain professional when many of us would not or could not, i have a lot of respect for the profession, its a job i could never do!

on a different note could you use web based cameras so you could
check on your place from home?

Search for a "weed burner" fence charger. Those will burn the weeds & grass back when it grows up too big.

DO NOT hook it up the fence to the power lines! That will kill someone and you will be charged with manslaughter. The fence chargers are much higher voltage, but extremely low current. So its painful, but doesn't injure.

My problem is they keep making up excuses, that is, LYING, for reasons to pull me over. "You were going 45 in a 35." "You didn't completely stop at that stop sign." "One of your TWO license plate light bulbs is burned out, I had to turn off my lights so I could check."

It's starting to get stupid. I know when they're going to pull me over, they see me leave, and follow me for about half a mile. Why would I commit any of those crimes if I knew I was being followed by a cop who I was pretty sure is going to pull me over anyway?

(and why haven't they ever given me a ticket or a warning for those "offenses"?)

Yeah, that's what I want to do. I'll be able to check it from my cell phone!

I'm trying to see if I can build a long range wireless network between my house and my shop (about 5 miles) but if that's too expensive then I'll just get some cheap DSL there.
